If you're ready to take the kind of thrashing you'll get selling to KEH etc. why don't you just do someone the favor and re-list here or elsewhere for a price halfway what you think they are worth and what you would get from KEH(1/2 what they are worth)?
You'll make more money AND make someone happy! Just a thought!!
SS

Sounds like a plan.

If after advertising my cameras and lenses here, on eBay or on Craig's list, they haven't moved, which is better to sell to outright: B&H,key, or Adorama; or to trade in?

My guess is you are asking too much for your equipment on ebay. Or, your equipment is not in high demand, out of date, etc. On ebay you can see what your equipment is actually SELLING FOR. I price my stuff about where it is selling for, I have had NO problems and get about 40%-60% more than trading it in to B&H and Adorama. I know they have to make a profit, BUT NOT ON MY STUFF.

I sell on ebay and never have a reserve price. With anything but junk, the bidders will automatically get the price up high enough. As for selling to a dealer, you can go through the lengthy process of contacting each one and accepting the best offer.

Try MPB.com.

Unlike B&H, Adorama and others, they are a dedicated USED outlet. They aren't undercutting their sale of new products with their sale of the used.

The process is very simple. You can trade or sell outright.

B&H remains my go to for purchases, but I'm using mpb for selling the newly replaced equipment once the B&H order arrives. By then I have a quote and know what I'll be getting back to pay down the credit card.

I just went through this issue, and used craigslist.org, letgo.com and Facebook marketplace. Facebook did it for me as the buyers were more real, had a Facebook history, were relatively local, and it used Facebook messenger to communicate and tie the communication s to the sale.
I found you cannot live yourself by what you see priced out there since you may never see the actual sale price. I priced slightly high for a 7D, kit lens (18-55 & 75 -300 no is) a Speedlite, wireless remote, battery, charger, strap, CF card 4gb and small bag.) The total had over time cost me 1k used and I had it 3 years avg. Asked 900 and took 600 but kept Speedlite. So my cost for 3 years was $8/month.

My equipment cost me less than my Photoshop subscription.

But I learned the market is flooded with junk at crazy prices. You have to give yourself wiggle room in as many ways as you can. And you have to make your offering stand out. Body only is common, full starter kit is not common on the used market.
Last, it sold in 15 days and 3 other offers fell thru as they were getting rid into bidding wars.

Good luck.

You can get a quote from Adarama and BH via email. But if Adams says $1300 that's not what they will give you. They will give 70% of the $1300. They sell it for 1295.00 or so. BH gave a $1000 email quote. Now if they give you the $1000 then best with them.

I recently went through a big cleanout here at home. It all happened before I found this site. Ended up working with three local businesses (used photo equipment dealer and two camera stores) and was very surprised at the wide range of prices, and the total reluctance of some to take all but the most recent equipment. The stores were not interested at all in any equipment for which parts were not available from the manufacturer, since they offer a warranty on what they sell and must be able to perform repairs, if necessary. The used equipment dealer sells as-is, and is happy to take older equipment. He also pays the least, because what he buys may sit a long time before he is able to sell it.

Of the two camera stores, one tends to sell used equipment at a significantly lower price than the other. But guess what...that store offered only about 60% of what the other did for the same item offered in trade. And it was the store that I do the most business with.

The way to get the most for your sale is almost always to do the work and find the final purchaser yourself. If you sell to a dealer or reseller, they are going to have to do that work, and since that's show they make their living, they are going to take a cut of the final sale price...at least 40 or 50%, more for hard-to-sell items.

Good luck on your sale.

I have bought here from other UHH members more than once and have been very pleased. I think the connection helps.

For B&H or Adorama, I doubt it makes much difference whether the cameras are sold or traded in. Both companies have established policies for what they will pay or give as trades; it is a factor of how much they think they can get at resale. If you can get 50% of your cost for an out of production camera, you have probably done well; unless there is something either unusual or unique about it, they have to plan on possibly having it on the shelf for a while. If the camera is still current production or very similar to that, you may do better, but for a retail sale to be profitable to them the markup (generally 30% minimum) still has to allow for the fact that it is used, and the buyer has no idea how hard the use has been.

I've found that lenses in excellent condition sell for 60-70% of their original value, and cameras more like 40-45% on eBay. You have to do a little research to get the price in the ballpark.

I taught an eBay selling class (non-credit) at a local college fof 8 years. The "crying and gnashing of teeth" night was when people went to the advanced search and looked up the same item, showing only the "sold" ones. It's a bitter reality check on how fast things drop in value.

I know many here are fans of KEH so I decided to try them. Not too thrilled with my first experience. It took a month to turn around. They offered far lower (half) than I expected and cited debris and problems that I didn't know and could not see from inspection or use of the lens. I was anxious to get the lens back just to make sure it hadn't been switched in the process. It wasn't. I'll go back to E-Bay.
