For those of you who live in Virginia and are older than 62, you might be interested in classes that are offered by state schools of higher education. For those of us over 62, we can take a course in a "Monitoring" status. You do not receive any college credit hours, but then again you do not have to pay anything for taking the class.
I took the "Digital Darkroom" class that is offered by NOVA at the Woodbridge campus and I learned how to use Adobe Lightroom, which is a very powerful digital editing software program. In addition, you can purchase the software program at a reduced price through the college Bookstore along with other Digital Books supplies.
One other thing, they even provide a parking pass at no cost. You may not get a degree or a diploma this way, but you do get the education, social enjoyment of being around other like interested individuals and sharing your ideas with others as they share their ideas and experiences in photography. You should check it out and see what your local campus has to offer and if you're in another state, check out what is offered, they may have something just as rewarding.

I have down loaded some of the free stuff.
I am willing to pay several hundred dollars.
I saw a video of Photoshop. You can do some really amazing stuff with it. The demo was a horse & editing the maine & tail. Very tricky. I'm not a penny wise pound foolish guy. You really do get what you pay for.
I would recommend Corel PaintShop Pro x4. Get a free trial from their website. Standard edition 39.99 at Target, Ultimate version often avail at Best Buy and Staples for 49.99

This works on Wintel, but not Mac computers, right?
I bought Pixelmator which is very similar to Adobe. I had 3 adobe programs and I loaned them to a flickr friend. I have a mac so I'n not sure if it would work for you.I just love all the choice filters and programs. Check on ebay. A while back I bought programs for 4 and 5 dollars. They were not for mac and I assumed they would.( MY BAD)Hope you can find stuff that doesn't cost a fortune. Peg

If you want one of the best that is easier to use than PS get serif PhotoPlus X5. It's excellent and cheap
I agree. Serif is very good
Thanks---using Picassa but don't like it.
If you want free and easy I use the picmonkey and also ipiccy, these are very good ones. The Photo Pos Pro is a download but close to some of the photoshop ones... I like the simple ones, and don't hurt they are free...

That is right, and other software too. On the other hand, you should try or buy Photoshop (or elements10)and master it. And since most people use it probably most, there will be always lot of free advice.
Download and TRY lightroom, corel, Viveza(you'll need PS10 at least)and more other programs which have good name and quality as they are now widely available for tryout before buy (30 Days usually),but none of people here told you, that there is NOT a program which will does ALL corrections needed. Also one of the best is Nikon's CaptureNX2(try it for 60 day) it use amazing Viveza (included)
Just saying...........
Thanks all. Software is a must but I have to get at least a 400mm zoom or the cropping will continue to be the problem. Moving subject closer is near impossible.
I have had some folks mention noise in my photos but most of this is due to the massive cropping. The focus is absolutly critical. I'm looking forward to learnig a lot here.
I have Photoshop Elements. Adobe Lightroom, and Smart Photo Editor. I use Elements 95% of the time. Smart Photo has some presets that I like. But I must be soft in the head because I find lightroom very confusing eventhough many hedgehogs and people in my photoclub tell me it is easy. So I would say try as many as you can for free and select the one that you feel you can learn the easiest. Decide on what features you want because whatever you buy you will only use about 15 to 20% of its capabilities unless you are into graphic arts
