Also thought you might like to know the camera bag I am using: Think Tank Mirrorless Mover. Sounds large but it is actually about 10" long by 5" wide by 6" high with a shoulder strap. Fits my EM 1 MkII with 12-40 on it and Panasonic lumix f4-5.6 45-200 beside it. Earlier I noted in error another Oly zoom but I was writing from memory......which is aging!

I am going on a city trip (business + pleasure) to Torino in June. I want to take my MFT camera with me (Olympus E-M1 Mk2), but would prefer to take just 1 lens with it, max 2. Currently I own 3 Olympus lenses: 30mm F3.5 macro, 45mm F1.8 and 75-300mm tele zoom (for birds). None of them fits the bill because of no wide angle capability. I will be doing photos on the streets (buildings, landscape etc.) and inside buildings (museum, conference hall). What do you advise I should get?

1. Olympus 12-40mm F2.8 pro + Olympus 40-150mm El Cheapo
2. Olympus 12-100mm F4 pro
3. Olympus 14-150mm?

The max budget is around ~1000 GBP.

Thanks.

I think that according to your budget you should get the 9-18 lens ($699 at BH) and 40-150 El Cheapo ($149 at BH). You need the widest you can afford for this kind of trip.

Thanks. Oly 9-18mm is rather dark, isn't it?

Yes, it's an f4-5.6.

If you need a cheap ultra wide, the Rokinon 7.5mm F3.5 fisheye is a blistering sharp lens and can be de-fished quite easily in post. It's also dirt cheap and tiny to boot. I just recently traded mine for the Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 lens.

My three prime lens kit consisted of the 7.5mm the 20 or 25mm and the 45 or 75mm. If I wanted to go small and light it was the 7.5, 20, and 45. If I wanted the best performance it was the 7.5, 25, 75.

My two everyday lens kit is the 12-40 and 75mm.

My kitchen sink kit is now the 7-14, 12-40, 75mm, 150 w/ EC-14 or 20, and a tripod.

My suggestion for you is get the 12-100 f4 if you can afford it and bring along a fast prime like the 20 or 25. The 20 is so dang small and light it's easy to misplace it.

That was my thinking too, although it increases the total cost. But it's tempting.

You could always rent the 20 ($31/week)...or find a good friend who is willing to let you borrow theirs ;-)

I nearly bought the 12-100 f4 for single lense travel. It is an ideal choice for that (I will be still traveling with a three lense setup). The advantage is the in lense stabilization and being able to hand hold to 5 seconds for night scenes. It is more that the ~$1000 limit you have indicated. But if you can afford the extra money, it will be worth it.

If you only take one lens, take the 12-40.

I suggested the 12-100 f4 as the best choice for single lense travel, but if you are worried about not having enough wide angle, you might want to consider renting or buying either the Panasonic 7-14 f4 or the Olympus 7-14 f2.8. I just got my Olympus 7-14 f2.8 last Friday and have taken maybe 10 shots total, but I will have interiors almost unbelievably covered. The lense is a totally impressive lense. And the Panasonic is only one stop less, almost as sharp, cost less that the Olympus, and is considerably smaller. Consider renting if purchase is too steep for your wallet. I do not think you will regret it.

Thanks. I think 12mm will be enough.

If not, you can always do a composite shot and combine multiple shots to make a wide panorama. I do suggest shooting in portrait mode when doing that, since you'll need to crop the top and bottom a bit.

Even works for moving objects :-) I think this was a 3 or 4 shot composite.

The new 12-100mm f/4.0 PRO is an incredible lens. If I could only have one lens, the 12-100 would be it, no doubt about it. With the stabilization of the E-M1 Mark II + the 12-100, you can easily shoot handheld for several seconds, virtually eliminating the need for a faster lens or a tripod.

In addition to your main mirrorless camera, take a pocket camera with you, with a focal length of at least 200mm. Stick it in your pocket. Take everything essential. One person on this forum took a vacation abroad, and actually left his camera battery charger at home. Unbelievable.
