I used to spit time between the 24-70 f2.8 and the Nikon 28 - 300, but when I purchased the Sigma 24-105 f4 it became almost super glued to my D800. It is as sharp as the 24 - 70 and has better range and VR. Now I mostly use the 28-300 on a D7000 for the extra crop factor making it a 450 and nice for wildlife shots.

I do not have a resident lens on any of the four camera bodies which I use. It totally depends on the subject and particulars of the shoot.

Though I have the Nikon 24-70 f2.8, for weight and range purposes, the 24-120 f4 stages on my "non-work" Nikon D750.

Nikon D810 with Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6. Sigma macro 150mm f/2.8 on the side, will probably go on the D810.

Eventually plan to own the 14-24mm f/3.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8 with a teleconverter for added range. Unless I have an unexpected windfall and can purchase the 300mm f/2.8! Then no teleconverter needed...
