David Warren "Dave" Brubeck (December 6, 1920 – December 5, 2012) was an American jazz pianist and composer, considered to be one of the foremost exponents of cool jazz. He wrote a number of jazz standards, including "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke". Brubeck's style ranged from refined to bombastic, reflecting his mother's attempts at classical training and his improvisational skills. His music is known for employing unusual time signatures, and superimposing contrasting rhythms, meters, and tonalities.

His long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, wrote the saxophone melody for the Dave Brubeck Quartet's best remembered piece, "Take Five",[1] which is in 5/4 time and has endured as a jazz classic on one of the top-selling jazz albums, Time Out.[2] Brubeck experimented with time signatures throughout his career, recording "Pick Up Sticks" in 6/4, "Unsquare Dance" in 7/4, "World's Fair" in 13/4, and "Blue Rondo à la Turk" in 9/8. He was also a respected composer of orchestral and sacred music, and wrote soundtracks for television such as Mr. Broadway and the animated miniseries This Is America, Charlie Brown.

David Warren "Dave" Brubeck (December 6,... (show quote)

Thanks for the remembrance - I will go play my copy of Take Five. First heard it in the early 60s when I was in college, and it's still a standard used to audition audiophile equipment.

A great loss to the music world. He is well loved among the jazz community. May God bless him and his family.

Lost Mose Allison also.

Regarding Desmond---no one could ever come close to what he did on alto sax. The first album I ever got (mid fifties) was Brubeck and Desmond. Still have it in storage. Need to get it out and play it sometime.

Thanks for this. I've been a big fan ever since I first heard "Strange Meadowlark" from the "Time Out" album (first Jazz recording to sell a million copies). His work over the years as been simply wonderful, groundbreaking, great to listen to, enjoyable and he swings. Can't ask for more. Luckily, we have so many of his recordings to keep him with us.

Thanks for posting this. You are missing Dave's last 18 CDs for which I was the recording engineer and my wife the piano tuner/technician. They are on the TELARC label and represent some of Dave's finest (at least in my opinion)

Saw the Quartet in 1966 at a small venue called The Music Barn near Tanglewood in Lenox, MA. One of my favorites is the beautiful tune "40 Days".
