What's back button focus? Never heard of it
Fotokop,
Have you tried replacing the remote battery with a known good battery?
Also what focus mode and shutter release settings are you using? If you are using auto focus with the release priority set to focus, and you have not focused the camera, the shutter will not release. But on my cameras, if I switch the lens to MF then the shutter will release regardless of the focus status.
Looked in tdhe setup menu? Can't find anything that makes it work. How is it labeled? All I see is ML L3 and times (I guess) but nothing happens.

Is this question for me?
I don't have a D3300 and I know the D3300 menu is very different than my camera.
But the release priority setting shouldn't matter if you switch the lens to MF mode, beause then the the camera "should" be set to release priority.
You can test this. Start wth the LENS in AF mode, and point at something out of focus and don't focus the camera, don't press the shutter 1/2 way. Simply press the shutter all the way down, to release it, and see if it will release. If not then the camera is in focus priority mode. Next switch the LENS to MF, and point at something out of focus and press the shutter all the way down to release it. It should release.

I can't get it to fire in ANY mode. New battery in the remote. What menu option are you shooting in when you use your remote?
check your camera's manual. For my sony, I have to select an option to use the remote.
there is also the setting in tools called remote on duration this can be used to give it 1min 5min 10 min or 15 min'
See Page 67 in your manual. Choosing a Release Mode
It tells you to set that up in the menu and it allows you a delayed release (two seconds after you press the button) or an immediate release.
Good Luck!
Just checked out my D5200 and here is what I found: Bulb mode for the shutter is only available on Manual control using the shutter button on the camera. Obviously then you must have the camera on a tripod and trigger using the MC-DC2 cable which also has a hold function to hold it down for whatever time you want. If you select the wireless trigger using the ML-L3 the shutter timer now lists "Time" and you use the ML-L3 to open the shutter and then press again to close the shutter. Basically it has the same effect as the Bulb function. Hope this transfers to the other Nikon models.
No such setting on my camera!
You said you had a Nikon D 3300 if you do then yes that button is there
Maybe you don't have the Nikon D3300?
