New Orleans has a wealth of opportunity, and also danger so do take care. Be aware of your surroundings, and don't look like a victim or a target. For food I also recommend Muriel's, also K-Paul (the late Paul Prudhomme's restaurant). Think about making reservations. For jazz, Snug Harbor just outside the quarter - take a taxi - is worth considering: http://www.snugjazz.com/

New Orleans is a very active place at night, in the quarter streets such Royal can be more interesting than the over the top activity of Bourbon Street. There are lots of side alleys that can be interesting. Also, given that New Orleans is a night town, early morning in the Quarter is a great time to walk around and use the early morning light and less populated streets. At night, sometimes just a small camera is a good thing, even a mobile phone..., especially if you get caught in a thunderstorm and a downpour and need a friendly place to shelter...

There are several places you have received info but you might want to look at The WW2 Museum. It is outstanding! Then there is a double deck bus that goes all over the city. At any stop you can leave the bus, explore an area and catch the next bus at the same place you got off and continue on. I recommend you get a seat on the upper deck for great shots.

My wife and I was there last August and we used Free Tours by Foot. http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/ We took a tour through a cemetery, and did a night ghost tour through the French Quarter. Also, like someone else mentioned, early morning is a great time to photograph without all the people mulling around.(people party into the wee hours and then sleep in).

I love New Orleans. Free ferry across the river to Algiers. Warehouse were most of the Mardi Gras floats are made. Kern's is the name. I took the shadow behind St.Lewis Cathedral before HDR. I took the statue by day and the shadow at night, then made a composite.

Nice. The Pirate Bar / Pirate's Alley pics I posted are just off to the right of the statue! And Muriel's restaurant is just about five minutes walk away (if that) on the other side of the Cathedral on Jackson Square! There's also a good bookstore in Pirate's Alley if you like such things.

Another place to visit (bar wise) is Pat O'Brien's on St. Peter Street / Bourbon. Famous flaming fountain in the courtyard and the home of Hurricanes. Definitely the best hurricanes in NOLA. Very refreshing on a hot day, but they can be deceptive. Each one has 4oz of rum in it, but it doesn't taste like it so they can sneak up on you!

Have fun!

That ferry wasn't free in June. I think I paid $2 each way.

Word of caution, be very aware of your surroundings. Grew up in New Orleans before moving to the north shore. What I have given you is really the short list. It should keep you busy for awhile.
The graves are above ground due to the HIGH water table, not low.
Have fun!!

This advice is spot on!
