Last night, after our female track star took the gold, she walked over near the area where the photographers were stationed.
The cameras followed and you got a great view of the area.
Out of about twenty five cameras mounted on tripods, I was surprised to see only four white lenses.

Why? Canon is the official camera sponsor and provides all the gear.
This is not about what is best what has been negotiated as advertisement.
Generally, those photographers use whatever equipment their agencies supply them with.
Not all L Lens are white. Canon's go to short wide lens the 24-70 f 2.8 L is black. You look for the Red ring.
I owned a 1980 Lake Placid F-1 for about ten years. Then a guy offered me a near new AE-1 plus two hundred dollars for only the body. I decided why not, since ninety eight percent of my photography was medium format. Still have that camera and three lenses.
Maybe Nikon decided to flood the Olympics with their gear by offering better prices.
That would be a great place to test the 500.
When you think about, rental makes a lot sense in a place like Rio. Rent, use, return, stay safe.

Both Canon and Nikon make their equipment available (for loan) to professional photographers at no charge. Both companies benefit from the PR, when their equipment is recognized in photos.

You only saw a small portion of the actual event. This is a image of Canon's Professional Services at the Olympics in 2016. You decide....

Wrongy, cut us a break! There is no official camera sponsor.
There are only 12 official Olympic sponsor partners and last I checked, McDonalds only sells burgers!!
Panasonic is the official supplier of electronics but not cameras.
Most photographers are independents using their own gear but get the support of Canon or Nikon professional services at the games if they need it.
I have personally been to 4 events and white lenses have predominated. I'll just assume black lenses are Nikons since I've never seen a Sony, let alone a Pentax, in the hands of a Pro!!

We must have been looking at different events. I was was watching men's track and field (100 & 400M), got a brief look at the photographers and pointed out to my wife that out of the twenty or so BIG (I would guess 500 or 600mm) lenses, there were only two that weren't white. I was actually surprised that almost everyone was shooting the same thing. Maybe they shoot Canon at the men's events and Nikon at the woman's? 😀

Canon's not the only game in town, and not all of their lenses are black.
Not sure what the huge fascination is with people who worry about what gear other people are shooting. Worry less, and shoot more.
