I haven't seen this topic discussed, so here goes. I'm curious to your approach when shooting alone. Mainly interested in days shooting away from your home.
What percentage of your shooting days are you by yourself? Do you shoot the inner city alone? What about traveling to foreign countries? What about night photo shoots; city or country? How about hiking and backpacking more than a single day? What precautions do you take, or do you throw caution to the wind? In my case I'm in my 60's but very healthy, although with age comes respect for what the environment could send my way. Thanks for sharing your approach and experiences.

I haven't seen this topic discussed, so here goes.... (

I always shoot alone although not necessarily by choice. If I go to a risky location I take the appropriate safeguards (wink, wink).

Shooting with someone or in group cramps my style. It also it can take away from your creativity. I do have a couple of close friends I get together with a time or two during the year, but that's it. I shoot mostly nature and I don't consider it a social event.

Wasn't a problem. Did Montreal last month. People were very cordial, inviting and friendly. I bought both Canon and snubby with me. I was ready to shot with either one. Sorry if my confidence disturb you. Looking forward to visiting Ontario soon!
Consider yourself lucky. Carrying a undeclared weapon into Canada, long barreled or not is a crime, so consider yourself warned. I just do not want one of our members to wind up in jail with a criminal record, hence the caution.
All the best.

When I travel my wife is with me during the day but I will go out after she goes to bed and before she gets up so I can have unencumbered alone shoot time.
Confirms what I thought - SS never sleeps!
A good and fair question Thomas. I live in an area around Houston, Tx, where I'm getting more and more concerned about being stuck out somewhere alone. In some locations, at night especially......intercity or country, alone, some serious thought should be given to having a plan. My basic plan is to be carrying. Of course, not every situation warrants that plan. Also, for those whose wife, or girl friend, is a photographer, I would never let her go out at night alone. Sorry to say, things have changed dramatically from a safety standpoint.

Well most of the time I walk with Janny. And a lot with a friend Jack from the site. But I do go out on my own a lot too. I have carried a gun sense I got out of Nam and became a body guard. I am a licensed body guard. And I have had to use it several of times with my work. I just always feel safer with it with me. So far the folks I have meet on the trails are great folks!!
I'm planning A month long trip to Florida for A cruise to the Bahamas with my daughter and her family for 4 days. Then take Amtrak to South Carolina up to Niagara falls for two days . Then to Michigan to see the rest of my family. From there to San Francisco on the California Zephyr back to SD. I go alone so I spend months ahead checking the places I will be walking around for safety and points of interest I make A travel folder with all the information for A well planed trip.
8 pages on this topic. Not often you see this. Interesting opinions though.
I traveled a lot for work, all the major and mid major cities in the west, including Alaska and Hawaii. I worked on a project I called my "Dive Bar Project. After meetings, I'd wander the streets seeking out dive bars. I'd find them, go in and start photographing people. I never ever had a problem
Kind of amazing -- no one lives forever, and life should have breadth as well as length. Take reasonable precautions, make cost vs. gain computations and take risks you feel are worthwhile. Life should be such that at the end you can look back and say "Helluva ride!". I enjoy having my wife along on photo outings, especially on multi day photo trips, though I can happily go alone. The last thing I would find amusing would be to be with a gaggle of other photo enthusiasts -- no that isn't true, a ravening pack of cell phone snapshotters in locations where you have to be on a tour is the worst!

I would NOT recommend shooting with expensive camera and assorted equipment in certain area's in NYC, Baltimore, Chicago or most other large cities. In some cases having company might not even be in your interest.
Which areas in NYC would you recommend one should avoid?

On pg.6 Gene51 claims that *all* areas of NYC are okay to go, and if you think differently, you are trapped by fear and probably prejudiced against non-whites.

Statistically, if one is the victim of a random rape, robbery, assault, or murder in a large US the offenders' last name won't be Singh, Sirico, Wong, Weinstein, Thorsson, or Takemoto

Over the 30 years that I worked for Fedex I worked in Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, the entire upper east side and west side of Manhattan all the way up the entire borough of the Bronx including City Island, and I've owned and managed properties in Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights and Bushwick. The only time I was ever the victim of a crime was at 81st and Lexington in manhattan. I guess I was in the wrong neighborhood.
