You would probably think I look sketchy. I wish I could ride a bike at 25 mph for more than a block or two. The south Bronx is better than it was at it's worse. Many RE developers are claiming entire blocks and neighborhoods - making the entire south Bronx an area in transition.

I remember visiting a fencing team mate in the East Bronx (I forget exactly where) who was going to coach me. He was Cuban and he insisted on escorting me to and from the subway for safety reasons. This was in 1953.

Perhaps, soon, the Bronx will go the way of Manhattan, much of Brooklyn, and parts of Queens and become unaffordable. I could not afford to live in NYC and wouldn't want to even if I could. It has lost much of the diversity which made it so interesting--the neighborhood shoemaker, the butcher, the tailor, the hardware store. All replaced by banks, Duane Reed, and condos for the rich.

Tolerance?? How can you be tolerant when you are about to be robbed?? I think it's best not too naive about where you should go in the "inner" city. Even as you say, Midtown isn't always a safe bet. Yeah there was Lincoln Hosp and do you remember St. Francis Hosp.

My sister was born in St. Francis on St. Anne's Ave.

Did I use the word tolerance anywhere? Risk tolerance is a measure of how much risk you are willing to take on for a negative event/incident that has a possibility of occurring. Some people won't ride an elevator - "too risky" aka - beyond their tolerance for risk. A financial planner will ask you about your "risk tolerance" - and will offer investment advice that suggests products that have high risk (volatility) but potentially higher returns to younger people, because they have higher "risk tolerance" and put older folks into investments with very modest growth but zero downside (you can't lose your principal) because they are more "risk averse." You know what I am talking about.

Where does all this come into "Shooting Alone?", I think we've strayed from the initial topic, or maybe I'm wrong...

A lot of past, a little future -- reminiscence, an age thing. :-)

Wow!!! I had no idea how we got this far. Very interesting stories even if the responses strayed a little from the topic. I've never been to a lot of the places mentioned, but it makes for interesting reading... and a wealth of advice.
Thanks.
Tom

I shoot alone to maximize my attention to my photography. The presence of others invariably distracts me from doing photography when and as I please.

The point about personal safety when shooting alone I do understand. As a rule, though, my photography happens near to civilization and to trails. So if something happened, I'm hoping another will find me.

Jeez the guy is a fairly new member you don't have to act like the a$$ that you are right away. That's one reason we are losing so many people because of sarcastizm like that. Be careful or you will be here all by yourself and no one to get sarcastic to except yourself.

I shoot alone sometimes but I belong to a photography club and we get together sometimes for group shoots or one of the members will call impromptu and ask if I feel like going for shoot. I seem to get extra motivation when I go shoot with one or two of the guys. For me, it's more comfortable with my buddies but I enjoy shooting alone also, especially when I'm traveling out of town. I have never gone into the city to shoot alone but I intend to do just that on my next trip to NYC. The last time I shot in NYC I was with family and I got some great shots in Manhattan and Queens. NYC is a photographic paradise. I'd love to spend a few weeks there shooting all the boroughs and Long Island. I've got to get up to The Cloisters in New York to grab some great shots. WOW, this topic has really got me going.
