Hi! I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and I also couldn't locate not only photos but Word files. I got on the phone with Windows support and gave them permission to work on my computer. I could see everything and we were in contact the whole time. All my files were retrieved and I have not had a bit of problem since.

I'm laughing. I just looked at the date of the original post. I certainly hope the problem has been taken care of my now.

I agree with Dave, look for files using explorer on you C drive etc. Also MS does backup your files locally on your drive. A third thought, check with your photo software company to see if it is Win 8 & 10 supported. Also, not related to photos but check your antivirus and make sure it is reloaded. Good luck

I've put several computers through the Win 10 upgrade, and have had no data loss. It's probably the case that you stored your images in something other than "My Pictures". In Win 10, this simply becomes "Pictures". All other user created folders and files should be somewhere in "Documents". Unless it was created outside of the old "My Documents" that is. You can also try exploring C:\Users\"your user name"

I have been in a bit of a panic and I'm not sure what to do. I updated my computer to Windows 10 and now I cannot locate most of the photos I dearly love on my computer. It says something about "permissions" when I click on an "empty" photo towards the bottom of my photos. I really would appreciate some help. Thanks HOGS. rpm

I have a new computer (to replace one that crashed) with Windows 10. I restored files from an on-line back-up for the old computer. Now some of the file folders tell me that I do not have permission to open them. I am the administrator of the computer and can find no other permission required. I imagine that your problem is related. Anyone have a solution?

Hey Hogs, I've tried all of the above and it does not appear that windows 10 saved my "old pictures." Fortunately, "the best of the best" I have saved on CD's I will download them into Windows 10 and go from there. Thanks for all of the help. Unfortunately I have fallen behind in computer technology. I do have a local computer store called Nerds For Me and will try to take it over there soon. Thanks again for all the help. rpm

I had trouble with my Win 7 so decided to do a re-install so I deleted 7 but when I tried re-loading the second disk of the saved Win 7 would not work. So I downloaded 10. Big mistake, so now I believe I have lost everything including my 1200 - 1300 pictures I had. It says I have a HP-RECOVERY D drive ut it can't be accessed any way that I know how. Live and learn I guess.

Search "My PC" for *.JPG or whatever format you save your pictures to and it will locate every pic on you computer.

Your photos are in the exact same folder they were in before you upgraded. Unfortunately, my guess you didn't really know where your photos were to begin with. They are probably in your Pictures folder. Use Windows Explorer, select the Pictures folder and they will probably be there. If they were in a different location to start with, that won't help. You can also use Cortana to search for jpg files, assuming thats the format they are in

Unfortunately it sounds like you were taken drastic steps without an understanding of the implications. Always a dangerous strategy.

Windows 10 upgrades does not delete data unless you do a fresh install which wipes out all your data and that is not the default.

Nonsense. I have updated six computers. (Yeah I know, how many can I use at a time? I produce a webinar series and they all get used.) I have lost NOTHING. It is all there. However, and it's one reason I don't use LR or other cataloguing software, your pointers are all messed up because the cataloguer didn't keep up.

Since I don't use LR, someone else can tell you how to do this, but there is a simple way of rebuilding the catalogue pointers.

Catalogue software doesn't show you the real photo. It's a little like the old library catalog. You go to the right drawer and look at the card. That card tells you where the book is. With LR, etc., the image you see is a pointer (card) when you chose the one you want to work on, LR goes and gets the real photo for you to work on. (Actually a little more complicated to maintain non-destructive editing.)

If the images are moved on the hard drive, the catalogue pointers no longer point to the right locations. (Someone moves all the books around in the library and changes the references.

Someone else will tell you how to do this.
