It's okay Jeep Daddy. No offense taken. I just searched UHH and found out l can revert back to my old program, but only within 1 months time, and I think its been over a month. Regardless, I appreciate your imput. Sincerely, rpm

Even if you can, don't. Solve the problem. It is not a Windows 10 problem. It is a problem of your software. I have read a lot of people's problems with Win 10 and EVERY ONE

This is not a Windows 10 problem. It has to do with your cataloguing software. (Most of the folk here use Lightroom to catalogue, I don't)
I have upgraded six computers to Windows 10 without even one hiccup. (I know, why six computers? I produce a Webinar series and four of them help make that happen. My laptop and a desktop are for personal use.)

I wrote out a complete explanation of how cataloguing software like LR uses pointers. Win 10 may scramble the pointers. The photos are still there but you'll need to redo the library pointers. Someone who uses LR can explain how. (Actually there are Youtube videos about this because the catalogues get messed up even without the upgrades.)

For anyone who has not upgraded, do it. Win 10 is the most stable OS on the market except for Linux. While there are some learning issues, it is not complicated. Actually simple, but different than we were used to. The free upgrade is going to go away after July 29.

I have a similar problem.
My photos on Win 7 were stored in 2 'master' folders. Pictures and My Pictures.
Windows 10 seemed to have ignored My Pictures (which coincidentally were the older ones) and all I have now is a folder called 'Pictures'. No: My Pictures.

When I do a look at them in Elements, the thumbnails are there but try to open them and the computer says they are unlinked. Further searches indicates they are gone.
Fortunatley I do hve a backup on a separate Drive.

No help to you I guess but youre not alone

Use the search facility in Win 10, if you remember any part of the name of your pictures. Actually you probably can search for My Pictures.

Don't. Solve the problem. Windows 10 is far better.

This worked for me in previous re-installs. Haven't braved Win 10 yet. A friend had this problem and her buddy guided her to the hidden photos. I'll ask her how she did that and post it here if it is different from this "old windows" trick..

Nonsense. I have updated six computers. (Yeah I know, how many can I use at a time? I produce a webinar series and they all get used.) I have lost NOTHING. It is all there. However, and it's one reason I don't use LR or other cataloguing software, your pointers are all messed up because the cataloguer didn't keep up.

Since I don't use LR, someone else can tell you how to do this, but there is a simple way of rebuilding the catalogue pointers.

Catalogue software doesn't show you the real photo. It's a little like the old library catalog. You go to the right drawer and look at the card. That card tells you where the book is. With LR, etc., the image you see is a pointer (card) when you chose the one you want to work on, LR goes and gets the real photo for you to work on. (Actually a little more complicated to maintain non-destructive editing.)

If the images are moved on the hard drive, the catalogue pointers no longer point to the right locations. (Someone moves all the books around in the library and changes the references.

Someone else will tell you how to do this.

I think you came close to hitting the nail on the head. In this case of upgrading the operating system, Microsoft has had a habit of changing the names any types of folders it uses. From "MyDocuments" to Documents, "Pictures to My Pictures" and some of these are not directly linked because they are reference folders, designed to allow you to see nothing.

The files should still be on the Hard Drive under C:\. An easy way to find the images is to perform a system search with the following search parameter: *.jpg

All photos have been backed up to an external drive and my PC is going to update at midnight. Eventually 7 will go the way of xp.
Wish they would get ALL the bugs out before offering upgrades.
I'd rather spend my time outdoors capturing images than dealing with post upgrade anxiety.
If you're too young to remember why the computer in the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey was changed to HAL I'll tell you later.

Windows 10 did not, does not, delete files. They are there somewhere.

You didn't ask but I'll tell you anyway.
The computer was to be named after the biggest computer company of the day, IBM.
When corporate finally read the script and discovered that the computer killed the entire crew they demanded that the name be changed. Just add / subtract one letter, IBM became HAL.
When I pay for products and services, the last thing I want to hear is that they're "somewhere"

I remember 2001 Space Oddesey. Saw it with my dad. HAL was quite a computer... lol. I liked the monkeys with the rocks and sticks. Think I'm gonna take a few to my computer! At least I still have a sense of humor about the whole thing. I know a computer shop called Nerds for Me. If you throw enough money at them they will even make a house call. I think that will be my next move... Thanks rpm

RPM,

HAL 9000 was a nasty SOB programmed by some know it all on old Earth. The initial intent for HAL (Heuristic ALgorithmic) navigational computer system was to deliver the sleeping astronauts to a new discovery far out in the Universe. HAL was programmed to override all Human instructions from around the space craft. When the sole living Human discovered the underlying threat he destroyed the majority of HAL's programming, one chip at a time.

Before you take the "Long Bone" to your CPU, see if you can find the search tool in the "Windows" icon (bottom left corner). Perform a search for a known image file from your camera. The search should reveal the new location of you old image files. The new upgrade should not have physically removed any files, or moved them to a new location on your hard drive, but Windows will rename folders like My Pictures.

If you are using a graphics editor that also maps all your image files so you can quickly find htem and manage them you may have to instruct the program to re-index all the image file locations.

Good luck.

Michael, wow you are good! I still like the idea of taking a femur bone to the CPU. How is it you know so much about 2001 I'll never know! Thanks for the advice; have to put the whole issue aside right now as we are about to see The Cure. Maybe Robert Smith will have the cure. Lol

My Dell recently died and I had backed everything using Acronis onto MyBook. I had a bit of a problem transferring the files from the hard drive to Windows 10. Apparently they transferred because my son was able to find them under "old windows" or something like that and transfer them to the new PC OS. My son told me that I should have a MyBook set up to my modem to pick up every change to any file that I want backed up immediately (like documents, pictures, music, etc.). I've decided to do that. Also, I'm going to use my current MyBook to back up files using the command prompt, which I believe to be simpler and more trustworthy than some software program.

When I was in Middle School, Los Angeles, I began reading Robert A. Heinlein and Red Planet, then moved onto Arthur C. Clark. As the years rolled by I enjoyed a lot of the popular SiFi books because the big boys were scientists in their own fields. After Orson Scott Card and his series of Enders Game I lost interest. Then along came I Robot to the movies, but by that time we were all living in the world of yesterdays fictional science.

When you get back from The Cure try this link from Microsoft:
