Ok....So you're retiring, and you get a nice little payout for all that vacation and sick time you've accumulated. You take a nice vacation with the spouse, but since you don't fish you don't need a bass boat. With the 10K you would have spent on a bass boat, what camera, lenses, and gear would you buy?
At least a D-4 and 24-70 2.8.

Ok....you've still got some room to go. Nice starting point.
I would get a Canon 7D and some L-series lenses, plus Lightroom, PS, and some plug-ins.
Then the 70-200 2.8 and if any left the 20-24 2.8.
A Canon 5D mark ll......EF 50mm f/1.2L and a EF 70/200mm f/2.8L telophoto lens........let the games begin.
In '94 for my retirement present to my self I bought myself transportation and travel convinience / comfort. Already had a good SLR & lens.
Clasic '69 Jeepster Commando 231 V6 W/turbo 400 auto trany
$3,500
Nice used - from a older couple who were upgarding-Self contained Colman Tent Trailer
$750
And had $5,500 left for gas, film & prossesing
Camping - Bodaga Bay,CA

Boy, that's a lot of assumptions. I'm already retired, so there's no lump of cash coming my way; all my vacations have been taken; I have no interest in bass boats or fishing.
This is a good question, though, especially with a limit of $10,000. That might seem like a huge amount of money, but once you start shopping, it won't seem like much..
If I had no equipment and could start with a clean slate, I'd get the D7000 (which I have now). I would stick with Nikon lenses unless another brand got equally good reviews. Just off the top of my head, I'd want a wide angle in the 10mm range, zoom or prime, a Micro 105mm (which I have), some f/2.8 zooms, going up to 300mm. I might also go for a 500mm.
Of course, I'd need flash equipment and miscellaneous stuff. It will be interesting to see how others answer this.
I really didn't get $10,000 but a heck of a lot more-I just learned not to spend all my nest egg- truth is Wifie would not let me.LOL

Nearly buys a new Leica M9 and one new lens...
Or a Nikon F, a couple of lenses, and $9,500 for film and processing.
Cheers,

Agree with the recommendation of Nikon D7000. However, also would suggest that you save a few $$ to share with uncle Sam come tax time. Sharing is important. :-D
Ok...Got my list together. I busted the budget a bit but stayed within about 10%. I'll make up the diff. selling my D7000 and 28-300mm. This does not include a bag or reflectors for the speedlights.
Nikon D800 2999.00
Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 1999.95
Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 1889.95
Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 2399.95
Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 1069.00
SB910 Speedlight 549.95
SB700 Speedlight 329.95
Total 11237.75
P.S. This of course is a dream list. I've been retired so I'm not getting a lump sum check to buy it with. There is only one other solution....go back to work!!! Of course, then I couldn't spend my morning having coffee and UHH.
I would like to hear what you think of my list. What would you add or subtract?
I think it is a good place to start.
