I think it is a good place to start.

I know. If you had more money, what would you add? One thing this list doesn't include is primes and super low light lenses or a super wide angle (10mm). I guess I'll have to work longer than I thought!!

Ok....So you're retiring, and you get a nice little payout for all that vacation and sick time you've accumulated. You take a nice vacation with the spouse, but since you don't fish you don't need a bass boat. With the 10K you would have spent on a bass boat, what camera, lenses, and gear would you buy?

Steve, I've got a better idea. Lets go into business together. You buy the gear and I'll take all the photos. All you have to do is kick back and collect all the big fat chicks(whoops, I mean checks)!!
P.S. I've already got the boat so you can still learn to fish.

I retired March 3rd and got myself the Nikon 70-300 VR. I just received a job offer and will be back in the work force in about a month. I plan on giving myself a return to work present of a new DSLR but will wait to see what comes out in the next 6 months or so. Perhaps the rumored D7100 or D400. Since the D600 will not have a internal focusing motor that is out of the question.

P.S. This of course is a dream list. I've been retired so I'm not getting a lump sum check to buy it with. There is only one other solution....go back to work!!! Of course, then I couldn't spend my morning having coffee and UHH.

I would like to hear what you think of my list. What would you add or subtract?

steve, it all looks good to me but i need about 5 SS checks this month to help pay for them.lol enjoy your retirement!!

Nearly buys a new Leica M9 and one new lens...

Or a Nikon F, a couple of lenses, and $9,500 for film and processing.

Cheers,

R.

You stole my thunder on the M9!

I like the list - I also am a bass fisherman - talk about another expensive hobby - luckily my wife bought me a bass boat as my retirement gift - between fishing and photography am having a great retirement - however went back to work part time to pay for it - you think a lens is expensive just try buying a rod and reel and all good bass fisherman need at least 12 or more - come to think of it having an ex wife doesn't help LOL

I would start of with Canon products and go this route:

Canon EOS 1Dx Digital Camera
Then add a Professional Photographer's Ultimate Envy Package:
Includes - 4 Extra LPE4 Batteries
Canon Speedlite 580EX II
Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
4x 32GB High Speed CF Cards
Shockproof Weather Resistant Backpack
Professional Hard "James Bond" Carrying Case
Pro Tripod Manfrotto055CX3 Carbon Fiber 3-Section
Pro Monopod GitzoGM2341, 4 Section Series 2
ManfrottoMH057M0-Q5
Ball Head with Quick Release from my Tripod

And I can get all this for just under $42,000 and will not need to purchase anything else.

Yes this is my dream goal and I would need a Lottery win to make it happen some day.

You have to havwe something to DREAM about once you get hooked on photography. :XD:  :XD:  :XD:

One of the new Leica M Monochromes for sure, although you'd still have to dig into your savings to put a lens on it.

Do you like photography?
$10,000 is a lot to me in UK.

I would go for Canon. You can check why by going to reviews.
You do not need to spend a lot on a body. [Does it have to be new?].
Glass is more important.
Canon f2.8L 70-200 = Excellent lens and can use teleconverter for reach. V. Heavy to lug around [ expensive £1600 for IS version!].£900 for non- IS.
OR
f4L 70-200 = Excellent lens for outdoor use. Very sharp. Some say better in some cases than the f2.8L. Very light to carry around and smallish so will fit in your bag.
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 [ £340 ish],cheaper than the Canon 24-70 [£900 in UK !].
Speedlight does not have to be top of the range [£250ish]

Even though you have all that money, I do not think you have to go for the ultimate. The lenses I have suggested have excellent reviews and you will need money for polarisers/Uv's and other stuff.
If you are overwhelmed by all this advice, go to a camera shop and feel the cameras. Say you decide on a Canon 500/550/600D. Hire my suggested lenses especially the heavy f2.8L. You will always have arguments about brands etc.

I think I would buy my wife an excellent camera and myself a new one of the same make, that way we each would have one not going back and forth with the same one

If you decide not to go shopping and get yourself any photo equipment then do some charity work and send the monetary package to me, just kidding.
