I am trying to get my wife into photography beyond her current iphone 6s selfies. Which Nikon cameras would you recommend? (I like to stay with Nikon since I have an D7200 and also access to my friend's D750). I am considering a new D3300 which will run me about $500 USD (with the 18-55mm lens) or I can get a slightly used 5100 or even 5200 for about $300 (with the same lens). I need something that won't break the bank in case she doesn't get into it but also something that clearly will show her that iphone 6 is NOT that amazing. What do you think? Any suggestions other than finding a new wife?

20Tri,
I recently bought a refurbished D5300 from Adorama for less than $450...I love it! I also have a D7100 but now use more the D5100 because it is much lighter and easier to carry ...good for your wife. Anyway check out reforms. Compare the 5300 v 3300.
Good Luck!

It would be cheaper to first find out if she really wants a camera, and if so, is she also prepared to put the time into it to learn how to use the black box?
If all you want out of it, is justification for your own purchases, find out what she really wants:
A pair of diamond earrings would be plenty of justification for you to buy yourself a new camera. Or if she likes to sew, how about a new sewing machine or serger? Or a pair of designer shoes with matching handbag...
Whatever, find out from her what she'd really like to have - if you don't, you run the risk of a very expensive investment sitting on a shelf, doing nothing.

I have the D3300 and I love this camera. It is about half the weight of my D300s and using the D3300 with prime lens makes this combination as light as a point and shoot. I keep a 35mm 1.8 on this body most of the time. Plus it has a Guide feature if she has a problem.

Any DSLR with AUTO or Program modes. Let her use these modes first and when she is comfortable she can move to Aperture, Shutter modes or even Manual.
But AUTO or Program is really a good place to start, I think.

I think you went off the rails at "trying to get my wife into photography". If it's not her thing, no kind of convenient advanced toy or proof of better image quality will entice her. You don't need anything expensive for someone who's only photographic interest is a good selfie.

My wife gardens, I golf. She does painting and crafts, I do photography. Make the same deal I did. Whatever I spend on golf, she gets to spend on the yard and garden. Whatever I spend on camera gear, she gets to spend on crafts and girly stuff. May sound twice as expensive, but in the long run it's cheaper than a camera sitting in the closet. She's happy, I'm happy... what price can you assign to that?

"She gets" being the operative words. Photographers R good.(gardening is good too) Photography=betterrst - (take photos of the gardeners' fruition). Press the shutter button. Time and time again. Capture the image. Peace to us shutterbugs and our sometimes off-canter posts.

Where can I find a new Sony A6000 for $400? Someone said this early on in this thread.

You can always say, "they're all good, just some better than others." Then let her hold your new 'big rig' and tell her, "honey, I wouldn't expect you to be burdened by the physical weight of a -my new- D750/810." A heavy flash hanging off the top, would add impact.
Better if you can keep a straight face. 8-)

Nothing like insider advice!
BTW: The back cover of WIRED Magazine has a stunning B&W portrait taken with an iphone 6. I looks like a pro studio shot, which undoubtedly it is.

If someone is good enough and can control the circumstances they can produce an outstanding image with just about anything.

Now taking that "anything" out in the field for an event or expedition of some kind, esp one where a lot of images are needed could be a lot more iffy. And the results would be a lot more restricted as to types of shoots etc.

IMO, see if she wants a camera, and if she does, have her make her own choice. A DSLR may be overwhelming. It was almost overwhelming for me when I first bought my D5500, and I bought it because I wanted to be able to use different lenses, and have more flexibility than my Nikon Coolpix P310 has. (That camera takes excellent pictures with an easy to navigate menu, and good night shots too.)

I seriously asked myself what had I gotten myself into! But I persevered because I really wanted it. She may not, and then you've wasted $$ that you could have put towards your FF camera.

I am a happy owner of D5300. Like you we have always had Nikons but only have recently gone into a DSlR. I suggested my wife buy a D3300 if she was really interested. She did buy it and loves it for the following reasons

1Takes great photos

2 Fits my hand perfectly.

3 Light and easy to carry around.

Hope this helps.

I haver a D3300, and like it. It will fill my needs until I upgrade to something like a D810. Of course, if you can get a D5200, or such, for about the same money, go for that. I gave my GF some lessons on using the D3300, and then loaned it to her for a weekend, so she could get her feet wet in photography. I think she is going to enjoy it.

If you're looking for a lower end Nikon like the 3300 (which I think is a great camera for someone just starting) check out BUYDIG on EBAY. They are an authorized Nikon dealer (Beach Camera) and the sell refurbished outfits. I sent a female co-worker of mine there last year and she bought a 3200 with lens for less than $300 I think and she loves it. She uses it to photograph her 3 children, family events and just things that look interesting.
She does really well with it. Like your wife she was using her iPhone before getting the Nikon

The interest in any hobby is up to your wife. NEVER try to inflict an intrest in photography on the wife. Furthermore don't belittle her cell phone photos. I just saved your marriage.
