We all have problems, you just witnessed one of hers. WHY DO YOU CARE? Smile, and if you have a sense of humor, say "yes dear", her response will dictate your further relationship.... I usta keep a card in my wallet, guidance for emergencies, card had a cartoon of Snoopy on his dog house, paws crossed, on his back looking at the sky,,.. the balloon over Snoopys head said "fuck it!"....

PC can create a toxic environment awfully fast. Fight back, leave, or put up with the BS. Best of luck!

I had a similar experience. We moved to a relatively small community following our retirement. I joined the local camera club, and it seemed to me that there was a lot of drifting around with no direction. So I suggested that I give a talk on composition from a photographer's point of view. I was continually being heckled by that past president and I let it pass.
The next year I was asked to join the committee. They asked me to organize a roster from speakers. Given that there were over 80 members in the club and others outside the I took up the challenge.
After six months I had no more speakers. So I called on the members (in a nice way, mentioning that it was their club and that there was an expectation that members contribute as well as "take away" ideas.
Boy, did that stirr the pot. I was told that I had offended the members and that I had to step down. So I did. And left the club. This is what happen when you move into a small town.
My solution was to search the net, and as a result discovered you guys. The richness of knowledge, experience, and support in this group is amazing and so I am very happy to have discovered this forum.
Please contact me offline if you intend to travel to the BC coast.

Yeah, quit the club. I'm sure the president has used the term "girls" many times - "Girls night out"?When someone goes out of their way to start an argument, it a good time to leave.

Hello,

I belong to a photo club. Like many clubs there is a membership problem. The president of the club kept after me for two years to become the treasurer which I finally did. Then anther two years venting to me about members not stepping up to do things.

The past year I ended getting involved in many projects that needed to be done. Several months back I seemed to pick up the president seem to have a different attitude toward me.

A few days ago I had to send some information about someone who was attending a meeting to the board of directors. The person who was coming to the meeting is a female in their mid to late thirties. I just said in the email here is the information for the girl who is coming.

The next thing I know the president who is female sent me an email chastising me to referring the this person as a girl. I was told I could create serious problems for the club and not to refer any member, non-member or vendor in an inappropriate manor.

I honestly was dumb founded when I received this email and I am now thinking of leaving the club. I am thinking of me referring to this person as a girl has nothing to do with anything and that by me stepping up and doing this other things may have created some king of resentment with the president.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Hello, br br I belong to a photo club. Like many ... (show quote)

Welcome to the age of political correctness. I'm the first one to say I HATE political correctness, because 95% of the time, there is absolutely no intention of ill will on the part of the person who is being politically incorrect. But at the same time:

The Platinum Rule is a good guide for life: "Do unto others as THEY WANT TO BE DONE UNTO..." In most urban areas, in fact most places in the USA and the Western World, most females over 14 do not want to be referred to as a "girl". "Lady," or "young lady," Miss, Ms, Mrs, or similar terms work well.

It may seem to be a compliment, but "girl" can have many kinds of degrading and insulting connotations. If you're not aware of them, just ask a few women to explain it to you. You'll have your ears burning in no time.

Women might refer to *themselves* as "girls", when they're engaged in "girl talk", but that doesn't mean you can use that term if you're not part of their group! It's the same as African Americans using the 'N' word to refer to their black friends. With them, it's a term of endearment, or brotherhood, or even respect (!). Coming from someone who isn't black, it's the worst kind of insult there is.

I know it's confusing, but you just have to accept it and move on.

I called my wife who is 65 a girl just the other day. NO offense was taken. Tell the PC crapper to take a long walk off of a short pier. Everyone does not think or talk the same. To some a girl might be anyone who is of the female gender in spite of the age. If you look in dictionary most words have multiple definitions and that is for a reason. While your definition does not fit the definitions in the dictionary there are definitions out there that are not printed.

If someone called me a boy and myself being of the male gender I have two choices, to be offended or to look at it rationally. A boy might be a young lad or it might make an older person feel like a young lad. I would take no offense either way. Be offended if you like but why the bother over so little of thing.

A boy might refer to someone being young or it might refer to an older man trying to make them feel young. Why be offended over something so trivial? But the President is using this as a sounding board and that should give you a clue to the fact that she is narrow minded and clueless.

Boy I'd REALLY be in trouble with the club president. Most of the time when I walk into a place where I often do business I'll say "Hey, kids!" Given my age (69) and their age (mid-30s) it seems appropriate.

Then again I've never, ever been accused of being politically correct ... go figure!

Personally I'd tell the president that it was meant as a compliment and if she didn't like it, here's your checkbook and a checklist of how to do what I'm thinking with it.

Again, refer to the 'not pc' comment above :)

Another example of out of control PC-ness. Ask the president two questions: 1) what sort of 'serious problems' would occur and, 2) what should a transgender person be called and see what response you get. BTW, if I considered identifying a woman as a 'girl' then I would continue to do so.

  I refer to all my 'girlfriends' as 'girls' and they haven't been girls for a very long time! lol People need to get upset over things that matter, not trivial stuff.
