Thank you. Spent three years in the Pacific (1943-46) Trained for the invasion of Japan, which never happened...thanks to the A-Bomb. Some say it was the "good" war.....There is no good war!!

Mike, as you said, no war is good and I know no one in the military wants war. As far as the bomb goes, it has limited war to a degree but since everyone knows nobody will ever use it again it is not feared like in the 50s and 60s. The fear is no returning again. I remember the bomb shelter that our house had (mid 50s). Used to play in it.

In the Navy from 1963 - 1970. Part of that in the Nuclear Navy working on the Staff of VADM Hyman G. Rickover. One of my worse memories was when I arrived at Logan Airport in Boston, a bunch of people, unhappy with the war, spit on me as I disembarked the plane.

never thought it was any great big thing at the time. Surprised when some say thank you. Many of the things I learned, and considered stupid, have become habits over time...like rolling underware, 21Aug15, 1530hrs, (AM/PM IS stupid)...
Super learning experience...one that I was to young to appreciate at the time.... you are welcome.... the leadership quality was quite good. I never understood why the general population and politicians looked down on the military, though the false tale "the DI" did help of coarse... I was often encouraged but never shit on...
.... from a hash mark PFC.

Nice comments. Thanks. Yes, there were some ugly things happening stateside back then. Draft dodging too.

Sgt. Milner USAF 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968. One of my life's best experiences. Later, used the G.I. Bill for college. Good benefit.

Too bad the concept of universal military service (the draft) was abandoned in the U.S.

While the services claim they prefer volunteers in their branches, there should be some form of universal national service with no exemptions. Male and female. A big job corps for America.

Thank you Gregg, 2 years in Vietnam but coming home was the worst part. I went back to grad school in the Midwest and when both students and professors found out about my service I was ostracized.

Thank you Greg, I was in the Navy, served on a carrier. I was "ships company" (crew member). Deployed to Vietnam twice, we flew search and rescue missions.
