A very nice thing you are doing. Did a tour in Korea and was in France when Charles DeGulle kicked us out so he could proceed with his A bomb in secret without NATO finding out.

To all the Veterans who are actually hogs. I recognize some of the Hogs are Vets by their byline or avatar. Rather than saying thanks to the few I can recognize I thought I would thank all the vets who are Hogs. If not for you none of us would be here talking about photos, etc. I chase you down in parking lots, restaurants, etc. when you may where a hat identifying yourself or still in uniform.

Thank You All for your service.

Greg

Were you there when the ammo dump was hit ?

I was in Phu Bai when the ammo dump there went up. What a light show that was. Also pulled outer perimeter duty in a bunker right by it. That was always scary.

Thank you for the kind thoughts. "Haze Grey and Underway 1966 - 1970.
Homecomings, at that time, were never as good as they should have been.
To all who served, you have my undying respect. To those who did not, you have to earn it.

HI,
I was in the Air Force 1962 to 1966. I was stationed at Charleston Air Force base. The Air force sent me there for 6 weeks of Welding school in Champagne Illinois after basic training at Lackland Air Base in San Antonio. Texas.
Then my permanent base was in Charleston, South Carolina
I stayed there the rest of my 4 years.
I just recently hooked up with some friends from my service Days.
Good luck to all the Veterans out there

Speaking for myself. I am sure I am not the only one who does not advertise they are a veteran, a hold over from back then.

I was in Cam Rahn Bay when the ammo dump blew up.

It was really something to see and hear a Daisy Cutter (15,000lb bomb) go off and the concussion his a few seconds later.

I was behind the barracks concrete wall and could feel the wave come thru the concrete.

Was very lucky that it didn't do a lot of damage. Though I did hear that some of the shops in the flight line didn't fair as well. The shock wave evidently came down on them and dented a few roofs.

I disagree with what I think you are saying. I believe the motivation was proper: an ally realistically feared an invasion by a communist aggressor, and asked for our help. We agreed to help, but did it wrong. Read Why Vietnam Matters (an eyewitness account of lessons not learned) by Rufus Phillips

Yes, I was there in 65-66 working mainly with Vietnamese as an advisor. The book agrees with my impressions at that time.

Well put. I agree fully. I was also there, '65-66. Welcome home.

Bad eyes kept me out of the PJ's. I never made it to Vietnam as the weather maintenance crew at Tachikawa AB had the "pay no income tax for the year" rotation game all sewed up. I didn't know about those politics at the time so my volunteer statement got me Okinawa instead and the next one got me a four year controlled tour at Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. With my usual bad timing I had submitted my retirement papers just before the First Golf War broke out. My discharge was delayed and it looked like I might finally get into the shit but the Saudis decided to run their own Air Base Group so all I got was my retirement papers and a thank you letter from the Secretary of the Air Force. Guess that makes me just another REMF after all.
