Okay since everyone is sharing...I've been stopped several times without knowing why I was stopped. When the officer walks up to my window, I roll it down and ask "Was I speeding?". Each one of those times, after checking my license, the officer came back and said to slow it down and let me go. I think it helped that I had other people in the car.
On another occasion, I was driving home late..about 10:30pm between Hillsboro and Salem OR, taking the back roads. Was driving through a small town and got pulled over for allegedly doing 51 in a 25mph zone. I had just picked up my car from the body shop that day (they finished the work on it a day early). I didn't have my registration in the car as I always take that out when leaving it with a repair shop for more than a day. When the deputy ask for my registration I told him I didn't have it (and why) as I was thumbing my way thru my file folder which contained the paperwork from the body shop. He asked where I was going, I said just trying to get home cause it had been a long day. After checking my license, he came back and told me how fast I had been going but was lowering it to 35 in a 25. Then he started going over the amount of money he was saving me line item by line item. Said the fine would be $140 but I would probably be allowed to go to "traffic school" (online) which would be $180 and thereby not have the violation against my driving record.
In my experience, if you want the police to treat you nicely, be respectful and nice to them first. They're just doing their jobs.
my last ticket about 2 years ago was for speeding - 25 in a 15 mile zone. The caveat was that I got this while riding my bicycle... Cost me over $200 and 4 hours of my time to take the "safe driving class".
ya not always that lucky...

Wow. Lucky you!
Did You old folk' obey like that when you were 16 to 20 Years old ? No I didn't think so if you are HONEST.
And I am old myself but I remember.
I once got a ticket on my motorcycle for 20 over. The officer used no rader, lines on the pavement, or any other method to guess my speed. Instead, he said he was an excellent observer of speed.
I went to court, and he had to show up (this was in Santa Rosa, Ca., in the early 70s).
I questioned him, and again, he said he was an excellent observer of speed. I said I waqs going t5o give him an opportunity to prove this to the court. I pulled a hard-boiled egg from my briefcase, held it up at an approximate 6-foot height, and dropped it. (Everyone, including the judge, stood up to watch this.)
I then asked him how fast the egg was going when it hit the floor. He had no idea.
Case dismissed.
Here in California I have heard it referred to as a "Hollywood stop." Either way, it'll earn you a traffic ticket if there is a cop around. :(

He was surprised at the number of people driving 60 - 70 MPH in 45 and 55 zones. Two of them did not have a driver's license. One was a 15 year old boy, and another could not speak English.
From now on, when I come to a Stop sign, I stop and count to two before driving away.
I know the feeling, I was once ticketed for doing 62 in a 35MPH zone.
One time bicycle riding, I came up to an intersection, looked to my right and down a ways and there was a Highway Patrol waiting. So I stopped and looked at him squarely. There were two other guys pedaling two minutes behind me, but they didn't see the cop and both of them ended up being stopped and ticketed.
From now on when I approach an intersection, I look both ways, not for other cars, but for the Police.

That is either sad or pathetic, I'm not sure which. Sorry.
But at least you are in good shape!
I just read an article in the newspaper about a biker who was hit by a car on one of our rural roads. He was going in the wrong direction in the lane. He didn't have a helmet on and was pronounced dead on the scene.
When I was working one Saturday I was on my way home to pick up my mother to bring her to the hospital. She was 95 years old and had fallen again. I really didn't have my mind on how fast I was going but I was staying behind another car and doing the same speed. Everybody was being pulled over and ticketed. When the police officer came to my window he apologized and said he didn't usually give tickets for going just 5 mph over the speed limit but some of the people who live along that road had complained. He asked where I was going and I told him about my mother. He told me that he had to give me a ticket because they were being watched, but that he was going to give it for not having my seat belt on which I did have on. Seems that wouldn't go on my record and would only cost me $25.00 at that time. When I passed back with Mama in the car they were still writing tickets.

STOP, is merely a suggestion. Ask my wife?
Last fall I was stopped by the town cop for not stopping long enough at the stop sign. He let me off with a warning. Now at that sign, I stop and wait for half a minute to be sure. People behind me get irritated.
