Lol.

Last year I had a number of GAS attacks so I just told my wife that she needed a new pair of shoes, purse or coat. She bought a lot of shoes, purses and coats last year :(

It is always easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. :)

Wow GramaG, you sure got dumped on here. I prefer to take the more supportive role.

First, the lens and Ireland. It IS a photographic haven. Everyone should visit Ireland in their lifetime. Learning about 'other cultures' is so healthy for everyone. So let your sites on Ireland. And take the best camera and lens that you can.

Second, does there exist a relationship in which 100% of everything is shared and in the clear? If there is, I certainly haven't seen it. And I've seen many wonderful relationships. I think most, if not all, have some things each keep secret. It is this person's opinion that such a secret is not an indication that a marriage counselor is needed. That said, just keep searching for a way to present the idea to your other half. I'll put the smart money on the fact that your other half has secrets too.

Thank you for your sound advice and support. I know my husband quite well after 30 years. He HATES to spend money even on himself, but he's tolerant of my spending. He just needs to warm up to the idea. He always gives me his blessing in the end.

Yeah, that's a good one, but believable? Funny.

Tell him that photography is an expensive hobby but as you acquire new gear, the list of gear you will need to purchase in the future is diminishing and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting nearer. :)

Sneak them in with great stealth. In the old days, the mob guys used violin cases.

I just bought 2 new lenses and I managed to get them into the house & hidden while my husband was visiting his sister. I put the 24-70/2.8 on my camera right away. It is a "little" bigger than the 18-140 I had on the camera but I don't think he'll actually notice. BUT, how will I explain that big 70-200/2.8 when I pull it out & put it on the camera? He WILL notice that! Birthday present? Right now, I'm trying to talk him into a trip to Ireland! Then I can justify the lenses!!?!!!?

Hi,

A golfing friend had a bad case of GAS. He made it a condition of the purchase of a set of clubs that the shop manager phone his home and announce that he had won them in a prize draw. Not sure if SWMBO believed this but it was a defence.

So... you want to spend a few thousand on a trip to Ireland to justify the few thousand you spent on glass?
Wow, yes, you really do have a problem.
Now, please don't tell me you will be flying 1st class to justify the cost of new luggage. Because new luggage would certainly call for a new wardrobe.

And the problem is?

Can't you use the standard reply my wife uses when I notice her in a new dress... "What, this old thing?"

Eventually, you will acquire enough lenses that the new additions won't stick out so bad. My 70-200 was put on a shelf for a few weeks, then the reply could be, "what, this old lens? I've had this for a while.

Ha ha, happens all the time. I have so many "old" lenses, even I forget!!!

Lighten up. We have a great relationship. I just spend more $$$$ than he does. Eventually I'll tell him...when the time is right. As far as the trip...I have to MAKE him have fun. That's how we got a boat. I bought it & he enjoyed it. HE deserves a trip after fighting lung cancer and I"LL enjoy taking photos!!!

My husband is the same way. Even though he pays off his credit cards every month, the house & two condos are paid for & he saves a good bit every month, he still hates to buy anything unless the old one doesn't work anymore. He loves to travel, so that isn't too much of a problem, but I practially had to put a hammer through our old TV s to get him to buy HD. I did it for him. I never watch TV. He loves the new one for his sports & movies & the shows that he likes. Bab

That "...he doesn't have any hobbies", Grandma, is a real stretcher! All guys need something to play with otherwise you'd go crazy with them around the house and under foot all the time. In my case the toys are my boat and camera (singular)!
