Sorry I asked. I was hoping for some intelligent conversation.

I think its a great and valid question. I'm new to photography and have a point and shoot l830. I've been thinking of upgrading and of course a logical question is "what camera". I've come to places like this to get help and not be cut down by asking a question that seems frivolous to those that have been doing this art of years.

As a new "photographer" its difficult to know exactly how to ask the right question to get the answers that you understand or desire.

I know I spend a lot of time just reading things for sure. But please don't think your question wasn't valid.

Your hopes will be met if you ignore those that only wish to be an annoyance. This is still the best site to learn on so ask your questions. You will always have an intelligent and caring person answer and help you grow. Despite those that only wish to hamper your efforts.

It is possible to get excellent photos with an iPhone, but it's no DSLR. You need a good photographer and the right conditions. A side-by-side comparison with a DSLR image will show significant differences.

I read an article yesterday about how in five years, only professionals will have still cameras because phone cameras produce acceptable quality, they are always available, and they can post online immediately. I doubt this prediction will come true.

As for which actual camera, yes it does make a difference. You are going to have a better chance of producing great images with a D810 than with a D70. There are so many design considerations when building a camera, things like shutter speed, fps, ISO, sensor, and electronics that produce the image.

A worthy photograph arises from three sources: 1) a good exposure; 2) a compelling composition; and 3) an interesting subject.

The gear used to do a photograph matters less than these three components.

That said, a camera in a cellular telephone has limitations due to the laws of physics.

There are a lot of choices when it comes to choosing a camera and there are a lot of trade-offs to consider. IQ (I stands for image, not intelligence) is not the only consideration either; convenience and cost are other important considerations.

If you have and always carry an iPhone then those are already two big advantages to that particular camera; the cost is zero and the convenience is hard to beat.

Personally, I don't need or have an iPhone but I chose a mirror-less camera over a DSLR because it was smaller and lighter weight. I sometimes wish I had a DSLR instead, but when I consider the cost and convenience I think I made the right choice - for me.

By the way, that image you see off to the left was taken with an old point-and-shoot camera that I had taken with me (because it was smaller and more convenient than the mirror-less).

I must think the camera makes a difference--I keep buying new ones.

That gallery is for their i-phone marketing to those phone lovers, and most of them are picture takers not photographers!

I love the simplicity of my iphone ....and have downloaded a few aps to modify photos....

as already indicated in many responses it really does depend on what your intentions are for the photos...

for social media and small prints...with a good eye behind the lens(phone) you will be just fine.

From what I understand of the history of photography, many avenues exist for achieving a photograph. This history more includes than excludes these avenues. After all, doing worthy photography, no matter the avenue, involves the skill and vision of the photographer.

The real difference as I see it is the sensor size. We all know that the larger the frame of film, as in 35mm, the better the quality of the photo. Hollywood has known this for about a century.

That also applies to digital cameras. Phones have tiny sensors and while the photos may look good in small size, blow them up and you get pixels because the smaller sensors just can't stand up to a larger sensor.

Crop sensors, as used in most consumer level dslr cameras are far superior to any phone sensor and can be blown up to large wall hanging photos. Full size sensors, as in the same size as a frame of 35mm film are the best out there at a reasonable price.

If very high quality is your goal at a large size then the larger sensor is the only answer.

Of course it is a promotion. And yes all taken with the iphone. But, it is an apple site promoting the iphone capabilities. Canon, Nikon, Sony and others do the same. What you do not see is the very narrow depth of field shots. The blur of a water fall from a well planed time shot. Anyone that looks at these and think 'Why should I get an expensive DSLR?', should stay with their iphone. I can deal with that kind of competition!
