Guess the lower aperture number the higher the price...

I see else where you have a 5D. Out of curiosity is it 5D, 5DII or 5DIII? At any rate it is full frame so none of the crop sensor lenses will work. You say you want a Canon lens, do you mean Canon as a brand or a lens with a Canon mount?

There is not a single lens that will do all of those things well. You either compromise on image quality or have more than one lens.
For most things my 6D does very well with the 24-105 f4 L. But it is not really wide, for that I use a 14 mm; it is not long, for that I have a 70-300 mm (don't use it much since I got the 150-600) and a 150-600 mm with a 2X teleconverter for really long shots; it is not really fast, for that I use a 50 mm f1.8 (6D is very good in low light so I don't see much need for f1.4 or f1.2)

Tamron makes two 28-300mm Di (for full frame) lenses, one with and one without stabilization. $400 & $850
Canon makes a 28-300 mm in their L series $2500

When I get my full frame I'll use the 24 - 105. At the moment I have a 60D and my walkabout on this is Canons EFS 15-85.

You could leave "Canon" out of the question and get similar answers. My all-around lens is a Nikon 28-300mm. The price is not too high, it covers a good range, and it gives good results. My Nikon cost about $950, and the Canon version is $2,550.

You're putting the cart before the horse.
I suggest you first decide what kind of photography you most want to do and then look for an appropriate lens . Only you can and should decide .

Good call John, I have 18-55, 18-135, & 15-85.

I recently added the 6D & 24-105 f/4 L. I love the full frame & have been doing a one camera one lens walk around. I will start carrying a 25mm extension tube with this "Kit."

You don't say what camera you want to use this lens on or give us a price range. Those two things would help us give you better recommendations. A nice lens for general walking around, general use, is the Canon 24 – 105 mm "L" lens. Below is a link to it she could look at it. You can get it for about $700 right now if you don't mind a refurbished lens. I actually prefer a refurbished lens because you know it's been checked over completely.

the 28-300 L lens on the 5d lll is still my go to all around lens. maybe I just got a good one but I find it works very nicely for me. I never played the trombone but I seem to get it easily to the "sweet spot".

Quality not withstanding nor part of the OP, perhaps something in the 16-300 range would do the job for you?

If I could only afford one Canon lens I would choose it to be this one.

What a stupid question!!
Why not just tell us how much money you want to spend, and what you want to do with it, and we might be able to make a recommendation.
As it is, you framed your question a silly way, trying to be smart ... and it just turned out ambiguous.

Canon 24-105 is very versatile, has a "Macro" setting which allows for close focus (Not really a macro) is wide angle, telephoto and works great for portraits.
No one lens is perfect for all these situations but this L series lens comes as close as you can and is built well. It is the "standard" lens on the camera all the time.
