I have a EF 28-300 MM f/3.5-5.6L IS USM attached to a Canon 6D, when coupled with my Canon 77MM 500D closeup attachment and an Op-Tech cross body camera strap I can shoot almost anything that I can think of. Oh yes, you will need the OP-Tech cross body strap to take the weight off of your neck! Weight is a consideration.

I am looking for a versatile canon lens (close-ups, wide angle, distance, landscape, portrait). I have heard that 24 x 70 and 35 x 105 are good options. Recommendations?

Guess the lower aperture number the higher the price...

I agree with "Bentree" on this lens selection. I suggest you get a copy of the Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 VC USM lens, first. It is just as good as the Canon, in that range. but unlike Canon's f2.8 lens it has image stabilization. The glass quality, I feel is better than the Canon "L" quality. The next lens on the list is the Canon EF 70-200mm, f4L IS USM. This lens is one of Canons best lenses. Lately Tamron's len in this range is giving Canon a run for its money. If you need more "reach" just add a 1.6, or 2X converter to the mix. I use both of these lenses on both my 6D, and new 7D Mark II. I shoot as a semi pro, and neither of these lens have disappointed me. You may want to look at the lenses for sale on "KEH.Com". That company deals with used lenses, and offer a warranty with your purchase. Tamron offers a full 6 year warranty on their lenses, to the original purchaser.

Good advice. The Canon is a little quieter and faster focusing lens, but a LOT MORE expensive.

I have the 7D.
The EFs 17-55 2.8 is the lens I use 99% of the time.
Someone just posted some nice canon lenses for sale in the buy/sell forum, here on UHH.

I have the 7D also, just got the lens you mentioned Jay Pat, and I am very happy with it.

I just looked up the OP earlier posts and note he shoot a 5D. If this is the case, lenses of the EF-S line will not mount on his full frame camera. If the original poster would disclose his actual equipment he would get better responses. From what I've seen so far, he has not posted his actual interest in what subject he wishes to shoot. I've seen mention from macro, ultra wide, mid-range telephoto, and all purpose lens. Maybe the OP could check the search feature of the Forum before asking for opinions on every EF lens in existence.

I'm shooting with a T3i and a Tamron 18-270. Great walk-around combination. Mine shows a red alignment dot, but I think it is a crop lens. Don't quote me on that, though.

The Title of this post was "IF YOU COULD AFFORD ONLY ONE CANON LENS?" In fairness there are just too many unknowns as to what he will be shooting, where, time of day and inside or out. All very large questions. No offense please, just saying.

I asked this earlier but got no answer. "You don't say what camera you want to use this lens on or give us a price range."

We can't give a good answer with out the info we need.

Time to click "unwatch". Bye

Well, you guys pretty much instinctively knew what he wanted. And I benefited big time, so thanks from me anyway! I have more than one lens, but also deciding on a general purpose lens to compliment my wide angle and telephoto. davidrb's recommendation of the 50mm is intriguing, and so cheap to grab the 1.8. But the refurb 24-105 definitely caught my eye. That lens seems to have its loyal followers as well as its detractors.
