I am looking for a versatile canon lens (close-ups, wide angle, distance, landscape, portrait). I have heard that 24 x 70 and 35 x 105 are good options. Recommendations?

Guess the lower aperture number the higher the price...

No such lens is or has been made. You do not have the wide angle covered and for distance you need at least a 200. The Tamaron 28-270 or some thing similar would probably be your best option. Personally I have that lens and seldom use it.

I have the 7D.
The EFs 17-55 2.8 is the lens I use 99% of the time.
Someone just posted some nice canon lenses for sale in the buy/sell forum, here on UHH.

I've seen where a lot of people on this forum use the 18/135mm as their favorite walk-a-round lens....

For years I have used the Canon 18-200mm lens on my 7D. The quality doesn't measure up to the "L" series lens, but the focal range more than makes up for the difference. And truthfully, you can't see the difference unless you're "pixle peeping" at blown up images.

The lens for which you are looking is an EF 50mm (add whatever aperture info you desire). 50mm's are what used to come on cameras and that was what was used for almost everything. Many great photographers lived by the 50mm lens. Today's zooms led to an entirely different way of shooting. Once you learn how to shoot a 50mm, everything else will seem simple. By the way, there is no lens such as you describe. Technology hasn't gotten that far yet.

From another topic of yours I gather that you have a full frame. In that case I recommend the EF24-105mm f/4 L IS. Unless you shoot only a very specific type of photo finding the perfect lens isn't going to happen, but for all around everyday use the 24-105 comes pretty close. It's been in production for quite some time which means that the price is reasonable and all the bugs have long since been worked out. Since it is an L lens it still gets very good marks for IQ and build quality. It is the go to lens for thousands of photographers.

I love my 24-105mm f/4. It is a perfect walk around lens and will not break the bank. I use it on a full frame, on a crop it might not be wide enough for you.

Canon EF 24-105mm zoom lens, or the Sigma 24-105mm zoom lens for Canon.

These two general-purpose lenses, I venture to say, could do 95 percent of your photography.

I do nearly all my landscape photography with the Sigma 24-105mm zoom lens mounted on the Canon 6D.

You may wish to rent to try before you buy:

Good luck.

Me as well. Is it as good as the L series. no, but I only shoot as a hobby. At an 8X11 print the 18-200 is just fine. It is virtually always attached to my 7d

If you are using a crop sensor camera I would recommend the 18-200 EF-S

I recommend the same one.
It is my primary lens on my 5D, but I'm not sure how far out Terpen wants to shoot. There isn't a single lens that will shoot all of the ranges equally well. EF-S lenses won't work on a 5D so he will have to decide what he primarily wants to shoot.
