Why Is Everyone SO JEALOUS of Canon Cameras??

I use my equipment professionally and it has to perform so not being a “gear head” a prestige buyer nor do I worry about brand names vs. brand names so I go strictly by performance and results. I would never get angry at anyone who differs with my assessments of equipment and I would certainly NEVER criticize anyone for their choice of equipment. I would not even dream of opining on any piece of equipment that I have never handled, used or seen in use by any of my colleagues in the business. I firmly believe in the old hackneyed phrase “different strokes for different folks”!

I current use a Canon 5-D Mark II for some of my work- I also use others as well- even digitized medium format and large format cameras and yes- a few old film cameras. I really don’t need many of the 5-D’s deluxe features and gadgetry- so why did I buy it? All I can tell you is to check out the images I have attached here. I like what it does, I find it very ergonomically suited for my giant hands, and Canon makes a soft focus portrait lens to die for!

We all want to own the best gear that we can afford but at the end of the day; it’s the good photographers who make good photographs and cameras are just the tools of the trade! If anyone “sees red” when someone uses the favorite brand name in vane, just think of it through a CYAN FILTER and the red will go away- it’s silly!

When clients ask me what camera I use (as if it matters) I tell them I once successfully used a Krasnogorsk (The Krasnogorsk-3 (Красногорск-3) is a 16-mm windup camera (Фотокамера) made in the former Soviet Union. The name "Krasnogorsk" comes from the city where it was manufactured). They were impressed!

No, no, you did not understand at last, have to try one more time. I like to have flash on my camera, I like to have advanced flash control in my camera, I like to have high resolution in my camera, at least 24 mpx and sometimes more. I like to be able to use all my old lenses on my new cameras. All this and more is possible with Nikon Dslr since many years ago but still not possible with Canon. I also wanted to try the new trend in camera tech so I bought last year a Nikon 1J2 and very happy with that one and have ordered a Sony A7r, 36 mpx camera with electronic viewfinder, focus peaking, focus magnifier etc. It is a very compact full frame camera with lot of interesting new features. I can use my old and new Nikon lenses with it or buy Sony lenses if I prefer. This is the smallest high resolution quality camera made today. And the price is a bargain. Canon has nothing that compares with this camera except for the one missing thing, the in camera flash. Nikon has the Df, with less resolution and the D810 which is much bigger and much more expensive but also in some ways a better camera. I am a camera gear freak and buy lot of camera stuff every year. The only reason I have not bought any Canon dslr is that I have not found one with any interesting or new features that I have not already bought with other cameras from other manufacturers before Canon had them.

But of course it is ok and good that Canon users are happy with their choice, Canon is just not offering anything interesting for me. I am just looking more forward in camera tech than Canon users and that is ok. Not everyone is making their choices for the same reasons.
No, no, you did not understand at last, have to tr... (show quote)

JPL, I borrowed a friends lens the other day just to try it. WOW
It was a 50mm f1.0......,WOW.
It wasn't all that high tech. I tried to teach it to, 'roll over', but it was too low tech, unless I gave it a little push.
I'm sure it's not high tech enough to impress you.
But for us low tech guys......, WOW!!
JPL, you should try one, just for the Halibut!

Hi JPL.
Be sure to buy lots of memory and lots of room for storage too, you will need it with those 36 mega pixels files and don't forget a to buy a hefty video card with lots of memory too? Because your going to need it for sure. In fact you need to buy a whole new computer to do all that post processing? Just saying! Have fun.....

Why stop at a mere 36mp? Go with a digital back for a Hasselblad or a Pentax 645Z for 51mp!! Or the dreams of those who want to put a digital back on a view camera. Eventually you can have more pixels than the subject has atoms! The sky's the limit!!

Maybe this thread should have been named "Why do Canon owners get so upset when other photographers are NOT JEALOUS of Canon cameras??"

I guess you did not read this thread very carefully. A lot of jealous Nikon users seem to feel the need to defend their cameras.

A lawyer would call this reply "non responsive". MP seems to be important to you only if Nikon provides it. Would it be so important if Canon provided it? Certainly doesn't seem to be important if Canonikon provides it.

No, you are absolutely wrong here. In fact it is a problem for me that Nikon is not providing more than 36 mpx. I have a phone that has more mpx than any Nikon, Canon or Sony camera. And that phone is a great tool. Most people do not understand much about megapixels, you seem to be one of them. Megapixels are not only about resolution, but also can be used for pixel oversampling like Nokia did with the pureview 808 and Lumia 1020 phones. Nokia is one of the most innovative companies when it comes to camera technology and still they are not and never have manufactured any cameras!! Only smartphones. It is a shame that the big camera manufacturers have not adopted to this technology. But I am sure that will happen sooner than later. If Canon manages to get on level with Nikon anytime soon then Nikon will probably look into this to get ahead again. That is if some other camera manufacturer will not be ahead of both of them.

Are you sure that Nokia isn't a camera company?? What I'm hearing is that they designed the camera and then built a phone around it.

Will it be next year or the year after that someone is pulling the chain of Canonikon owners by saying that they are jealous of what the other companies are providing??

Hey- This ain't fun! Everyone is talking and not shooting! Show some pictures taken with your Canon, Nikon, Hasselbald, Sony or whatever! Megapixels are for scientists and engineers- pictures are for photographers.

I am a commercial photographer and I need sharp pictures so of course I am going to look at the specs and stats before I buy a camera but what really counts at the end of the day is the results. The there is the ergonomics of the camera itself- I want something that is like an extension of my hands and fits my working style. I know one of those little "smart cars" are cute and have amazing fuel consumption stats but I can't fit in one so I wont'e buy one any time soon!

Where's the BEEF! Oh! I mean Where's the images?

I use winter time for discussion of wisdom, like here on this forum. Will go out again next spring to take more photos  :XD:

OK So...Here's a shot: It ended up as a 40X60 Trans-Illuminated menu board in a restaurant. Sharp enough? It was shot with my Canon! Could I have done this with a Nikon of the same grade and value" I'm sure! On jobs like this, however, I need the megapixels and the sharp glass regardless of the brand.

E.L., let me again welcome you to the Hog! I commend you for your effort! But, you being new here, you just don't yet know the idiosyncrasies of the Hog.
Let me explain. The demographics break down into only about 3 catagories.
1, there are those that know lots about old cameras, tripods and lenses, but can't actually shoot.
2, those that know everything there is to know about things like pixels, sensors, dof, CoC, DR and exactly how noise is created. And they post some shockingly awful shots, but most are pros, so they never post their good shots as they would be immediately stolen and others would get rich off of them!
3, this is a very small minority, but they are very good photographers but post quite sparingly. Some are amatuers and some are pros.

So you see, this site is not about photography. It's mostly about what camera you have, how many megapixels it has and what you should buy!!

SS! Thank you for your message- this is exactly what I expected and I love it! I also suspect that some of the gang wants to improve their photography as well- and that’s good too. Truth be told, I too like to discuss all manner gear, technical stuff and all the fine technology that is nowadays at our disposal. Lord knows I have enough gear to fill a used camera shop (see photograph to prove that) and I cherish every last item! Thing is, I use it all to make photographs. Photography is my job and (sadly enough) my hobby too. Sometimes I feel bad for pro photographers or photography enthusiasts who keep spending money on equipment, supposedly to improve their work, but the equipment, oftentimes, has little to do with their issues. So… perhaps I can save the odd guy or gal from wasting their hard earned money and instead to concentrate on their skills. In certain cases I might be preventing a divorce or some poor guy being murdered in his sleep by a disgruntled wife ($)! I like to give folks money saving tips and encourage improvisation.

The only images I post on the Internet are ones that I don’t worry about being stolen or creating privacy, copyright, business or legal issues with my clients or anyone else. Not to worry! I never resort to snobbishness or harsh remarks.
If my avatar photographs looks to “professional” I can change it to the more indicative one- see attachment. Oh- I forgot to mention that I have a strange sense of humor- I have been known to laugh at funerals!

Sincerely, Ed
