My best guess would be a red shouldered. I have some pics of one from when I lived in the Midwest, and they could be twins LOL.

I tried this link and can't get it to work.
I still stick with something other than a Red Tail, just because I have to be different, lol. I honestly have no idea now..... :)
Well...It's between a red tail and a red shouldered. I wonder why they call it a red tail, there's no red on the tail?
DEC... just type in Whatbird.com and it should work... it is a great site
The underside of the red tailed hawks have a reddish tint LOL. I'm sure an ornithologist would shudder if they read this, but for a casual observer it is very difficult to distinguish a red tailed from a red shouldered. The only reason I have any real knowledge of them is because I had a little red shouldered male who, with his mate, had built a nest right in the middle of a horrendous clear-cutting/construction site who loved to flirt with me. I think he knew just how gorgeous I thought he was, because it was near a friend's business and she told me repeatedly that she would not see him, other than just a brief glance, until I would drive up. As soon as I did he would land within 10-15 feet of me and hop around on the ground and squawk at me if I didn't immediately pay attention.
Fortunately, the property owner was a bird lover and in exchange for a set of nice prints of our hawk family he kept the construction on the other end of the site until the nest emptied.
Red tailed or red shouldered, they're both gorgeous to me.

I believe it is an immature Red Tail.
Definitely not a Coopers Hawk.
It is not a Redtail.
It is a Buteo of some sort.
My best guess is either a Broadwing or an immature Red Shoulder. The young of these two look very similar unless one is able to compare them side by side.
The tail turns red after the first molt which begins in the spring after their hatching. The first-year birds have coloring like that shown in the photo but the banding is different on a redtail. This is not a redtail. The eyes and size of the beak are entirely different than a redtail.
Ooops, gotta go get my camera. I have a Carolina Wren flitting around in my BEDROOM !!
Carolina Wren touring my bedroom.
I'll add my vote for Red-shouldered adult. Seems the best fit from my two birdbooks.
The photo is that of a red shouldered hawk according to my Audubon handbook.
Definately a red-shouldered hawk. I have one living in a sycamore tree in my front yard.

Caught this hawk yesterday and would like to know what kind it is. Shot with a Nikon D300, Nikon lens 300mm f4 in aperture priority 1/2500s ISO 200. Thanks for any input.
I feel fairly confident in saying that it is a red shouldered hawk!
