Caught this hawk yesterday and would like to know what kind it is. Shot with a Nikon D300, Nikon lens 300mm f4 in aperture priority 1/2500s ISO 200. Thanks for any input.

I thought it might be a Coopers Hawk but I got to looking at one that I shot a few years ago and it looked different. Unless this one is a young hawk ?

As in young hawk I was referring to the first hawk that I posted.

If he was turned around, he would give us a better idea. I'd say a Red Tail.

I'm not saying your wrong but he doesn't look like our Red Tail that we have here. They are all such beautiful creatures, though. ;)

Yes, if he was turned around I would have a better guess. He'll be back I'm sure and I'll be waiting.

Red Shouldered hawk? They're common in IN and KY.

Thank you !!! You may be right on that one. Here is another pic, maybe this will give more insight on what kind of hawk it is.

Yes, I hate when that happens. I'm just glad I got a shot because the other day another hawk (or could be same hawk) was in the same tree and by the time I got the camera he was gone. That one was facing me which would have been a better shot.

I like your shot of the hawk.
