OK. Here goes. I guess this is OK since a member requested it. (If not OK, please let me know right away and I won't do it again.) All three were taken with a Sigma 150-500 on a Nikon D300, at full 500mm, hand held on a sunny day in my backyard, except for the sandhill crane, which was in a fenced field.

I am currently shooting a Nikon D3100 with a af-s 200 lens. I use paint shop pro 4x and aftershot for processing. My heart is in lanscape and wildlife photos so I find myself really pushing that little 200 mm lens to get me photos its not really meant to get. So i end up trying to blow them up for detail in paint shop and wind up with photo degredation. I can have a crystal clear shot of an eagle feeding as a 5x7 but when i try to make it grow i get noise. oh, by the way I view my pics on my tv, a visio 32 inch hi def. that may be part of the problem too. A 5x7 or 8x10 may always look noisy when it fills a 32 inch screen? I don't know. On the other hand I get some really great shots if conditions are right and i can get closer. Sorry about the blah blah....what I'd like is some advice on a great quality lens in the 500 to 600 mm range with auto focus that will work with my nikon (only because i've read that the manual focus on those is very tough to deal with) and some opinions as to whether i'm causing myself trouble by using my tv as a monitor. thanks to all. There is such a curve to this stuff i can use all the help i can get.

I think you mean you're cropping the shots to make the far away subject fill more of the frame. If so, remember that when you crop the photo by 50%, you lose 50% of your file resolution. You may be cropping even more than that. When that goes up on your 32" screen the lack of resolution is revealed. You definitely need a longer range lens or a 2X doubler or an adapter to put your camera body on a telescope or siting scope.

I just got rid of my Sigma 50-500mm zoom in order to get the Sigma 150-500mm zoom with OS. Its quite sharp and the OS allows me to use it handheld at full zoom. Only had it less than a week but love it already, its at least as sharp as the old one was, maybe more so. Taking it to Yellowstone Park next weekend for a real field test. And the price is right too! $1069, also it will yield a 225-750mm zoom on your crop sensor body.

Hi MT ... have you used it long enough to offer any comments on it's performance handheld at settings below 1/500 @ 500mm?

Wow! That's what I'm talking about. Great pics especially hand held. It's not often I get pics like these but every dog has his day...I've got a few. But I dont get them as often as I should. Great pics.

I have a D90 and just recently bought a D7000. I had been using the Nikkor 55-300mm for birds and critters, but on some occasions it just didn't reach out far enough. Last week I ordered a Sigma 150-500mm for more distance, it should be delivered tomorrow. Since I don't have it yet, I can't speak on it's quality, but others on this forum have indicated that it is a pretty good lens.

Maybe this will help others too. I had a Sigma 150-500mm on a D90. It was a good lens until it locked up in burst mode. That was over a year ago. I don't know if Sigma fixed that problem. I think it was in the owner's manual on how to unlock them. I bought it from a dealer and he gave me my money back on trade for a Nikon 400mm. More expensive lens but worth it. Let me know if it locks up. If it does It sounds like loose parts inside but okay again when unlocked. I also shoot birds and critters but only with a camera now.

You guys can zoom all you want, but if you want real QUALITY imaging, with FAST reliable AF, at or past 500mm, the cheapest lightest way to go is 300mm 2.8 with 2X - preferably used and preferably Canon and preferably on a monopod or tripod ( no need for IS/OS ) - although the LATEST Nikon is also OK. .... Concerning Sigma: I just sent two faulty new lenses back - so IF you happen to get a good one ( especially on the first try ) consider yourself lucky ! Below is an image I just did with with my second Sigma 100-300 F4 with 1.4X - which is turning out to be an excellent lens! ( only to 420mm though ).

rjb, the problem may not be with your lens at all. The image size and quality can be set in your camera. If you have not done this, try setting setting your pics for JPG fine and a large format. At least, that is what I do with my D-90.

Let me know how this works out.

MT Shooter I'm assuming you're using this on your D7000 would you try it with your D90 and tell me how it performs.
Thanks

I used the older 50-500mm Sigma almost exclusively on my D90, using the D7000 with my 28-300mm Nikkor VR.
I haven't used the new 150-500mm on the D90 yet as I have not had the opportunity, only had it out the one time so far. Will use it on both bodies at Yellowstone this next weekend.
