I just joined a local Meetup photography group that meets 2X a month and offers workshops, outings, tutorials, & more. In fact,I for the very first time I'm exhibiting at a local library with this group. Also in my area is oldest photo society in the US. They meet every week.

I, too, am very shy but I roamed the Meetup boards to "check out" the locals and was very comfortable at first workshop.

Have fun and learn. :)

I'm in the same boat; I would love to join a photography club/group, but haven't been able to find one near me. I would love one like the one Katie Mae just described!!

yes, i am a member of my local camera club and just joined last december. You will gain alot of knowledge from the people who have been taking photos for a long time on depth of field(one presentation),settings of cameras ,composition of pictures, lighting and myriads of other topics. The other day we had a presentation of photos by a pro taken on cape cod of lighthouses, marshes &surroundings, harbors etc. and she discussed the lighting conditions and tide conditions needed for good shots. We a have alot of competitions on color, black and white, macros, florals etc.,which i am not crazy about . The next meeting we are going to have a presentation on the use of photoshop and this fellow is really fantastic with it. But just an hr. presentation is jsut a drop in the bucket.Definitely Join One!!

Bob! Such a great page for your group. I was instantly drawn to the report of your Antelope Canyon trip. I made that trip in Fall 2010, traveled that long and lonely highway to the point where you meet with the guides ... only to discover since since it had been raining that morning all trips further had been cancelled. I gotta tell ya, the amount of rain was rivaled by the amount of tears I shed. I see you even had the flute player guide I'd heard about too.

Joined one here(Birmingham, Michigan) and it turned out a little boring. I guess it all depends on the members and their contributions of knowledge and experiences. This one showed their photos over and over and judged from rotating panels. It seemed a waste of time. They could have exhibited them and spent time in meetings for information updates. Just my opinion.
Good group=Good club

This forum is the only "club" I belong to. We meet everyday, at all hours. The best part is we get to meet a lot of great people from around the globe.

I can't agree more MisterWilson...although if there was a club close by I would give it a whirl

There are no photo groups within proximity of my home.
I did go to a couple of them when I lived close to a city but found the members too egotistical and out of my class.
If you didn't own at least a name brand DSLR or higher nobody wanted anything to do with me except to try to sell their woefully obsolete equipment ...

A photo club should be about photography, but, peopole being people, it can become, "My camera's better then yours."

That is the main reason I haven't done anything about a club.

I can't remember where I saw it here at UHH forum, but a group of Floridians (is that correct?) were talking about a meet-n-greet this summer. I'll poke around and try to find that thread. You should venture forth Mac!!

Thanks AVarley
I guess I should check things out.

I found a local club that is informal, which I like. We chat about things photographic and we go on "safaris". A safari can be as simple meeting at the local vintage railroad station to take photos. We sometimes get "assignments" such as take a photo of fresh fruit or "reflections". It's all fun.

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, I missed that trip, even though I had been looking forward to it for almost a year. Shorthly before the trip, my wife went into the hospital and then a nursing home. It was a heartbreaker for me as well! The photos were all donated by club members who did make the trip.

I retired and joined two camera clubs. I am so glad that I did. Both groups are full of people with different skill levels and a common interest .I have learned a great deal and met some new friends. Do not be shy , join a club and get to know some good people. You will be glad you did.

I have been to a couple over the last few months. i am still trying to figure them out. A lot of them at least at this one seem very pretentious.

And rather snooty. LOL maybe it is because they have not figured me out yet, who knows, I am gonna give it one more try.
