I'm sure it's the same uTubes, but the guy used a Canon to drive nails. Does that mean we don't need to own a hammer?!
Let's all just use our cameras!!

And your point is? Obviously nothing to do with weatherproofing. So much for that...

... That just because a camera is weatherproof or water-resistant doesn't mean you let it sit in the pouring rain.
Similarly, because a camera's body is tough enough to drive a nail, it's not to be used as a hammer. Pretty (yawn) simple.

And who said you could let it sit in the rain? Yawn, your 'example' has no relation to the subject at hand

I would suggest you invest in rain covers for your camera(s). I use, and have been pleased with Aquatech brand covers, but they are a little pricey. Ebay has lots of alternatives for not much money.

What protection do I need for cameras (me Nikon D3100, wife Canon SX50) due to weather?

I've used the OpTech Rainsleeve for several years. The venerable "camera condom" (my term) has always worked well for me. :D

Here's a link to the B&H page talking about it:

Above all, take a light rain coat and a wide brimmed loose cap you can jam into a pocket when its just windy but not raining or misty. Dress in light layers you can easily add or subtract. Was in London and Manchester for a soccer tourney 5 years ago and it was not as wet as I had been told. Spent a bit over a week in Ireland last June and, again
contrary to expectations, had rain only one day. I assume you have plenty of spare camera batteries and a charging system that will work on the European voltages and prongs. If you take a short and a long zoom take lens/body clear covers; or a camera like the fantastic traveler Cannon SX50HS (24 to 1200 optical zoom with stability) you need only take a "just big enough Tamrac or such camera/gadget bag. At worst, you won't melt, but wet can destroy today's electronics-driven cameras. I took over 1400 shots in Munchen, Ireland, and Spain last May/June. Take more of something like Lexar 1000X 32 GB UDMA 7 digital storage units -- you will see new irresistible shots every time you turn around, or you hop another open-topped double decker city tour bus. Have a ball, and I hope you reward your fellow UHH members with some sample shots upon your return !

Layers are best so you can add on or peel off during the day and top layer should be waterproof. If not wearing a hat, at least a hooded jacket/windbreaker.

You wouldn't be too wrong if you visit the wrong neighborhood in America. But my sister was in upper class areas in front of a very expensive hotel when this happened. The person that smacked her, hit her so hard that he knocked the breath out of her. She reported it but to no avail.

I lived in Cambridge for many years, I'm now just 20 minutes drive away.

I live in England and in all the years I have been involved in photography I have never seen anyone walking around with rain covers on their cameras. I have certainly never owned one and have found no need for one.

Smith, there was no slight to you intended. So what WAS the subject at hand?
My point was that if you have a Pentax, or any other DSLR, and that's how you demo it to your buddies, by putting it under the faucet, then that's fine. But seeing it on uTubes doesn't mean all that much.
As I said, there's that Japenese guy on uTubes, that uses DSLR's as baseballs, in the surf at the beach, as a hammer and all kinds of craze stuff, and they all work afterward. I thought that WAS the subject at hand!

I'm definitely with you on this! The level of weatherproofing on cameras nowadays without raincovers is just fine; and unless it is quite of an extenuating circumstance, no one is going to be outside in the rain taking pictures!
Great outfit, by the way... I've always admired how the Brits dress... you're all so put together. :-D

I was out in this all day, admittedly I was using my D700 which is waterproofed, not waterproof, it was soaked but there were no ill effects.

PS: I will have to update my avatar to show my new Donegal tweed suit :D

Great shot! The big guy is saying to the smaller guy, " Let's get over to Jimmy's for some Courage and call it a day..."

Let's see that Donegal suit! And also, your street photography in front of Jojo's... was that all shot with the D700 or something smaller?

That was with the D700 and a Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6

Nice, sharp and contrasty... I would have thought some of that DoF was at f2.8... the scenes are awesome, tell a tale.
