That's what I got my friends at the FD for. They have the gear and I get some nice shots as part of being their photographer.

Besides, I pay taxes that help purchase that equipment so I should be able to get some knowledge and photos out of it since it could also help train them in the future and therefor maybe even helping save some lives.

If I ever get some spare money I want to get Nikon, Canon or Fuji and have it modified to take colour infrared only. Some of the false colour photos I've seen are absolutely gorgeous.

I don't like just converting all the photos to BW, it's more interesting sometimes to play with the colour in editing programs. I use Paintshoppro X4, Corel Photopaint X5 and Fhotoroom HDR. Here are some more photos I've taken.

Geoff,

You have quite a bit of talent with your post processing. I do B&W because I like it and it is fast and easy, color takes a long time for me and it takes a very special photo I'm willing to colorize. If you look back through this post you'll see a few color ones from me.

You might check into some of the IR sensitive visible light cameras mentioned earlier in this thread. You could pick one up on ebay or Craig's List for $30-100 and then just add a filter. Less limiting than your Sony because you could use whichever IR filter you like and still shoot handheld, just a suggestion for IR on the cheap. Much less than an SLR or a conversion or a converted, used SLR.

I shot some with my RM-100 today but haven't even looked at the photos yet. Much darker than the R72 and requisite longer shutter time too. I had to bump up the ISO to 200 from the 80 I use for the R72. As soon as I get them processed, and if they look any good, I'll post them here. It will probably be at least a week though. My work week starts tomorrow and I've got a multi-day hiking/camping trip coming up so who knows when I'll get to the photos.

Take care,

Eric

I am never quite sure what page # I end up on, hopefully I am at the end of the line, oh well.
Another lovely sunny afternoon yesterday, so I hoped the yard work, house work and laundry would do itself while I was gone, so, I loaded up my old Oly 2100 into my old Subaru Forester and off we went.
The Gazebo picture I think is too contrasty but Eric I know you like lines and angles. This was taken across the Banana River and in the distance in Port Canaveral you can just see three of the huge cruise ships in port. The other is the opposite, a softer image, nothing exciting.
As always your comments and critques are welcome.

Wendy,

I like the gazebo shot even if it is a bit contrasty. Can you select the bright area on the left on the boardwalk and use brightness or the dodging tool to tone it down a little?

I like the softer image too but it looks like you have a lens flare coming down from the upper left corner.

I am fortunate that my Little Woo does the laundry and house cleaning on Sundays so that we can spend Mon-Thur (my days off) together without chores messing it up!

My Little Woo did not show up, so I did laundry at least!
Yes I messed too much with the Gazebo, I should have really started again. The garden, it was getting late and the sun was low in the sky and creeping into the picture.
Thanks for your comments, always welcome.

Tracey,

Thanks for the feedback.

(I'm still bummed about Rome!) I think you are learning to see in IR and previsualize what your final image will look like. Your composition is strong and I like your subject matter but the post processing still needs a little tweaking. Your highlights are still a bit hot in the lighter areas of the houses, boats, clouds, and palm trees and your blacks need to be darker except for the middle photo which ironically also has the most blown highlights. Good, strong blacks really help an IR photo 'pop'.

Controlling highlights is probably the hardest thing to do with IR capture because once detail is lost in highlights, it is gone forever; I still struggle with that.

You have made a lot of progress in a short time but you are already a very good photographer (as evidenced by your bird portraits). I feel certain that is a very short time you will be crowned 'Queen of IR' ;-).

Then we can start working on faux color...

Eric, thanks for all the nice comments and critiques.

Tracey,

Surely there are a few cemeteries around you, FL was one of the first places settled in America by Europeans. Here in TN there are graveyards around some small churches and you can see small family plots scattered about everywhere.

I went to a local park by a lake and the light was not good when I got there but was improving by the time I left and I captured these images.

Geez, what a difference some light makes! LOL...That last shot is just inspiring! Really gorgeous!

Honestly, I don't know of an interesting cemetery around here. I know it's weird, but in this area of Fl. there is nothing OLD. I am planning on going to St. Augustine with in the next 2 months, and that is where the first settlers landed. (Ponce De Leon)...actually the oldest city in the US. There are ghost tours, and a fort, that should be perfect for IR...hopefully with your tutelage, I'll be ready to get some awesome shots!

Tracey,

Is there an oldish downtown or even a new one; buildings are great in IR, it renders crisp, clean lines. Playground equipment, lots of interplay with light and shadow there too. Watch out for overprotective parents though, as a woman you probably won't have somebody thinking your a perv grabbing photos of small children. Any big mansions or a gritty looking industrial area, watch your back and stay safe. Sunny sand and front lit clouds with some breaking waves work well too. Perhaps some shoreline panos with/without houses could work. I am sorry I didn't shoot IR when I lived in the TX gulf coast a few years back. Galveston would have been perfect for IR, oh well...

Remember mid day when it is too contrasty for visible light is perfect for IR. With good strong light you might try some macro or at least close up work too. (let's not get worked up on what 'true macro' is close ups will do just fine) ;-). I know one guy who shoots some fantastic bird images in IR, mostly snowy egrets.

Remember to spot meter the brightest part of the image to preserve highlights and bring up the rest of the photo later in post processing.

I hope you have a bright sunny day and come back tonight and post some new images. It will be cloudy all day again here :-(.

Eric

ps I found some unprocessed images from Lake Watauga back in '09. The first one is one of those shoreline shots, great clouds that day. The second is the 'Glory Hole' a drainage device that prevents water from flowing over the dam and possibly washing it away. It is HUGE, probably 50' across.

Hello all from another bright sunny day in Florida. Tracey it is a pity that we are not a little closer or we could go on shoots together! I have just been out again, but not looked at what I have yet, but in my part of Florida too, although a lot to photograph, I feel like I am contantly getting water and trees, nice images but all much the same. I don't think I am too comfortable cruising cemetaries..........I am happy to stop the car where ever if I feel it is an interesting shot, but I feel I am in an 'IR rut'. St Augustine will be a great place, you will enjoy that Tracey. So if anyone has any ideas to get me out of my rut please let me know.
Thanks,
Wendy
