Lovely set. I have seen really black ones in fair numbers in the parks of lower Manhattan island.

We have black, gray and red squirrels in our neck of the woods just south of Ann Arbor, MI. Not too many gray's and the red and black's co-exist quite well. The blacks arrived about four years ago. They are a bit smaller than the reds.

Great pictures. Did you take them in my garden when I wasn't looking? lol. Most of the squirrels are brown, but A black one does live in the neighborhood.

I posted an image of a black squirrel recently and was told by a couple of hoggers that they had never seen a black squirrel before.

As it turns out they are very rare save in East Texas. I would say that every fourth squirrel I see is a the Eastern Texas Black Squirrel...the black squirrel is a melanistic sub group of the Eastern Grey Squirrel and is reportedly seen across only 1 in 10,000 times. Not so in east Texas as you can read in the text of this link:

The attached recent shots are of differing poses of the same individual black squirrel...enjoy, that is if you enjoy squirrels!

Encourage you to see a few of the DLs...

Very interesting photos of the black squirrels. I love the silver in the fur also. They look a bit smaller than the grays, but then black was always said to make you look smaller. :-)

Never seen a flying squirrel? They're nocturnal but I have them living in my attic. They have on occasion invaded my living quarters. If you want some excitement have a flying squirrel and a cat in your kitchen together.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed and yes, I too believe the color makes them appear smaller...

Enjoyed looking at your pics,hb3. They look as if their fur is black with silver tips or is it just the way the light fell on them.

The first black squirrels I saw were in the Botanic Gardens in New York City-- about thirty years ago. shortly after saw some in the Connecticut River Valley here in Mass. About ten years ago I began to see them in town in the Berkshires where I lived at the time. So far have not seen any here on Cape Cod.

The only white squirrel I ever saw was in the 80's in Arlington VA. I watched it out of my friend's window, but could not get closer to see if it was truly an albino or a mutation.

I live in California and I've never seen one. We have gray squirrels and what I call red squirrels. Never seen a black one. They have smaller ears than the ones around here.
