I posted an image of a black squirrel recently and was told by a couple of hoggers that they had never seen a black squirrel before.

As it turns out they are very rare save in East Texas. I would say that every fourth squirrel I see is a the Eastern Texas Black Squirrel...the black squirrel is a melanistic sub group of the Eastern Grey Squirrel and is reportedly seen across only 1 in 10,000 times. Not so in east Texas as you can read in the text of this link:

http://myetx.com/the-east-texas-black-squirrel/

The attached recent shots are of differing poses of the same individual black squirrel...enjoy, that is if you enjoy squirrels!

Encourage you to see a few of the DLs...

Very nice shots. As a side note, my brother-in-law lives in Warren, OH, and they seem to have more black squirrels than grey.

We live in Georgia south of Atlanta and my sisters property has black and white squirrels. Never seen any like this until she bought this land. Mostly your normal greys in Ga.

We live in a heavily pine forested area...perhaps that environment is a haven for these guys...I have not seen a white squirrel...but I have seen one of these black squirrels with a white tail...

hb3, northern Michigan also has black squirrels. They surprise you the first time you see one, wondering if you can really believe your eyes.

I'll bet so Bob...had no idea of their rare status, until some hoggers indicated they had never seen such a squirrel...

I live in Calgary and we probably have an equal amout of gray and black squirrels. I would NOT consider them rare as I have seen many black squirrels in many different locations. I agree SOME areas do not have black squirrels. The squirrel that I have NEVER seen live is a flying squirrel.

Interesting comment...perhaps we Texans think we own the rarity....
