They are plentiful here. I lived just 15 miles west of here for many years and I didn't see one until I moved to Norwalk.

Nice set. The first black squirrel I saw was in Marysville, Ks (I think), and the town was filthy with them. They do take a good photo, don't they?

I posted an image of a black squirrel recently and was told by a couple of hoggers that they had never seen a black squirrel before.

As it turns out they are very rare save in East Texas. I would say that every fourth squirrel I see is a the Eastern Texas Black Squirrel...the black squirrel is a melanistic sub group of the Eastern Grey Squirrel and is reportedly seen across only 1 in 10,000 times. Not so in east Texas as you can read in the text of this link:

http://myetx.com/the-east-texas-black-squirrel/

The attached recent shots are of differing poses of the same individual black squirrel...enjoy, that is if you enjoy squirrels!

Encourage you to see a few of the DLs...

We live in a heavily pine forested area...perhaps that environment is a haven for these guys...I have not seen a white squirrel...but I have seen one of these black squirrels with a white tail...

HB, there is a LARGE colony of white squirrels... NOT albinos, but pure white Virginia Grays, living on the shores of the Ocholockonee River in South Western Wakulla County near the borders with Franklin and Liberty Counties in the Western portion of the Big Bend of Florida's Panhandle.

A buddy of mine used to have a hunting and fishing camp on the river in the Curtis Mills community of SW Wakulla and I was SHOCKED the first time I saw 5 or 6 of them running the trees in broad daylight.

Some of the old timers said there was a Country Doc from Virginia who brought a dozen of them down to his winter lodge back in the late 1940's to establish the colony. Other folk say they came from up river in Gadsden County. Either way, since that time they have flourished in SPITE of the large number of natural predators in the area, and have even managed to colonize both banks of the river.

And yes; Hawks, Owls, Snakes, Bobcats, Foxes, and Coyotes catch and kill them if they can catch them.

I've got to get over that way and try to grab a few pictures for you; those things are about as tame as cats in the neighborhoods because people feed them. ;)
