[quote=hb3]I posted an image of a black squirrel recently and was told by a couple of hoggers that they had never seen a black squirrel before.

As it turns out they are very rare save in East Texas. I would say that every fourth squirrel I see is a the Eastern Texas Black Squirrel...the black squirrel is a melanistic sub group of the Eastern Grey Squirrel and is reportedly seen across only 1 in 10,000 times. Not so in east Texas as you can read in the text of this link:

I haven't seen totally black squirrels until I saw your photos. Here's two interesting links about squirrels in North America. the second one is about black squirrels.

My brother lives in a apartment in the older part of Elko Nevada. While I was parked on the street, waiting for him, I noticed a large dark colored squirrel with tufts on it's ears, quickly crossing over the street via the phone and tv cables. It used it's tail to maintain balance. I ask my brother about them and he said, there's lots of them in that area and he often sees them using the cables. He showed me where the cables pass by two large pine trees and said, he thinks that's where some of them live. I don't have a name for these squirrels.

Nice photos. I have never seen one. I have seen white squirrels on campus in Brevard, NC. I guess they are pretty rare as well.

The attached recent shots are of differing poses of the same individual black squirrel...enjoy, that is if you enjoy squirrels!

Encourage you to see a few of the DLs...

Thanks....having read through the responses to this post, I would think that a white squirrel is much more rare than a black...
