All I can say is WOW! You said this was a lucky shot - not! This is knowing how to capture such a shot.

Spectacular. He has a cowl of water light following him. Any special set up or all timing?

This is a terrific image Brent, in any league.
My tendency is to view a photo as a a whole and this has, for me, huge impact.
Separating all the elements -- you have got, sharpness, detail, color, composition, exposure etc. etc. going for you. This is the result of skill and craftsmanship on your part, and not just simply luck.

Thanks for the tips. I'll try to make you proud.

Just be patient and shoot a lot of photos. When shooting surfers, they move so fast that you have to shoot at 1000th of a sec or faster to freeze the motion. ALSO (very important) you have to anticipate their next move and be ready.

Selkii, when I said "lucky", this is what I meant:
I do all the homework that I need to do. I shoot in Manual mode so I get the shutter speed, the F stop dialed in and the ISO prior to the shot. I often do test shots then delete them just to get the correct exposure first. I make sure the focus point is in the middle (I can always crop the image later). Then after the homework is done, I'm ready and waiting for the surfer and the wave to join together in harmony. I anticipate the surfer's next move and shoot in rapid fire (5 1/2 FPS) to capture the entire movement of the action. LUCKY is when it all comes together and the lighting is good too. The lighting on this photo was good. I throw away more photos than I keep when shooting surfing shots.

That is a super shot. As per your discussion luck grows out of doing the heavy lifting first.

Yep, "the more I practice the luckier I get" quote comes to mind. I like the original but the manipulated one has great visual impact. Thanks for bringing us a sport as an art form.

Thank you gawler. This photo is one of my top ten in my opinion. I know we shouldn't be proud people, but I am rather proud of it anyways!
