I really like this one. Nice and sharp. The surfer is off-centre and isolated and framed in the white "swirl". And I also like the dark and light green ocean combination. Goon 'un mate!

I would like to try some shots near the Huntington pier. 1) should I just check the tide tables for the best surfing times?, 2) what are the recommended beginning settings?, 3) Will my 18-270mm be ok? 4) I shoot Canon T2i, will the 3.7 burst rate be sufficient?

1. If you go to this website:
http://www.surfline.com/home/index.cfm
and click on "cams & reports" you will be able to get a somewhat accurate report of what the waves are doing, high and low tide, etc., there is even cameras for some locations so you can take a look before you go down there.
2. I always shoot in Manual mode and my settings are usually something like this: 1000th of a sec shutter, F8 (can varry), Iso 100 (can varry). I would bump up the ISO if you need the image lighter, but don't go past 800 as a rule of thumb.
3. Your 18-270mm will be just fine if you shoot from the pier near the surfers.
4. Your 3.7 burst rate will be fine. Mine is a 5.5 and sometimes it's almost to fast. Just get your timing down with the surfer and recognize what he is going to do before he does it.
