Oh! Man! Come on Searcher you forgot to acknowledge all the GIMP tutorials by various members. Do you have something against GIMP? Surely not you, Searcher.

Even though you don't have it in RAW tere is still quite a bit you can do. NIK Software has a suite that will let you have the same type of control over the image... just not as much of it.

Good shot!

Shakey, I have nothing against GIMP, and yours are by far the best GIMP tutorials on the Hog. Mike Gallagher created a list of your tutorials and these are in the Post- Processing index.

I have a direct link from Lightroom to GIMP and am fortunate to have two monitors. So with your tuts on one screen, GIMP on the second, I am slowly picking it up.

Your thread is, but my link was to critique/analysis. It's unfortunate the word "analysis" is in both forum titles.

For the MOST comments, and general critique, put them in Photo Gallery and ASK for critique.

For the strongest comments by some of the biggest egos here, use the PC&A section.

I think it is time for me to learn Post work. Unfortunately I don't think I have this one in RAW file either. As for the original file it is on my desktop along with other photos I would post for review and not with me while I have some free time at work :-(

If you go to the Home Page, then click on the All Sections option, then you will find the Post Processing and PC&A sections as sub-Forums here.

It is best to decide where you want to start

Gimp is free and has a lot of power but for most it is not the easiest of programs to learn.

Picasa is free, simple to use but does not have layers.

Photoshop Elements can do most things as can Corel Paint Shop Pro

Lightroom is a File Management program with a great capability for raw conversion and retouching, but no layer capability.

Photoshop is the bee's knees for image manipulation but is very expensive and there is a lot to learn.

The best combination (in my opinion) is Lightroom + Elements or Photoshop.

If you are new to post processing, I would suggest you try one or two of the free processors and you will soon discover which way to head.

PhotoScape is another FREE option.
And PaintShopPro is a VERY good alternative to the PhotoShop and other Adobe over-priced options.

I obviously owe you an apology, Searcher, and I gladly give it. Have fun with your PP whichever program you choose to use.

Apology? not required nor deserved.

We all have our favourite programs, and I thought that being fairly used to Photoshop I would get to grips with GIMP very quickly. Not so, the icons are too small on the screen display so half the time I pick the wrong tool. This leads to some interesting effects!

Posting to Photo Critique here at the hog will get you what you want. But, posting in this area, and asking for a critique will also elicit answers.
