Please, whatever you do, don't buy one of those D800 or D800e Nikon cameras!!!!!!!!

I want one; but can't afford it yet, so I don't want everyone to have one before I do.

Hmmm, yes. Is it a US model? Really new or a return? I usually don't buy from anyone that will not list a physical address on their web site. Can't find one there!

Good luck.

Yes this post is a little bit about climbing on bandwagons, ego trips, G.A.S, and peer approval. Its also about something more important.

We used to agonize over which film for which color or saturation or sharpness or sensitivity or grain structure, etc... Unless you get antsey with your post processing its a little difficult to alter those aspects in the digital world.

It isn't the 800 camera i'm nutso over, its the signature that sony sensor imparts to the image. Its color depth, color sensitivity, luminance sensitivity, adjacent cell blur, and color skew differ from my 7100 in ways that more closely resemble the original scene for me.

In the old days i could alter the characteristics of my film plane with a different $2 roll of fim, now i have to buy a different $3000 body/sensor.

Hence my appeal to my fellow hoggers to bless my blowing my lunch money on a camera only marginally better at capturing images than than the pea shooter i already have.

Yes, it's okay to upgrade from Ektachrome 200 to Velvia 50 (the original RVP).

And, to needle CHOLLY: the Nikon-Sony sensor on the D800.

oldtigger....I have the D7000 and D800. The D7000 sensor, is, of course, significantly the same sensor as the 800 on a crop scale. I was amazed at the vibrance of my images from my first shot on. Not having compared it with the 7100, I can understand your rationale. Go for it, I have enjoyed my 800, and I feel that I have a camera that will meet all my future needs. No D3, no D4. Now, it's what lenses to purchase down the line that will really bring out the quality of the 800.

I shoot Canon, but I'll throw in my two pennies. You should buy this camera because you obviously want a new one, and from what Ive read, it's a terrific camera. You get to be alive for only a short period of time, so if that Nikon would bring you some joy, and if you can afford it, what's the harm? I just upgraded from a 5D to a 5D mark III. It can be said that I didn't NEED a new camera, but it sure makes me happy.

Same scenario ... I am a canon user, was very happy with the 7d and had been eyeing the 5d3 for over a year. Finally bit the bullet and got it a few weeks back. Shot with both on my last trip and the more I use it (the 5d3) the more the 7d is getting to be my backup now. You only live once and as much pleasure at we all get out of photography why not make the best of it. From what all I have heard the 800 is an excellent step up, as good as the 7100 is....

Happy birthday. You will enjoy your new D-880e. I have a D-800 and have not had any remorse in getting it. You will love the large files.

Last year i expressed the desire to buy a 600/610 to keep my 7100 company.

I slunck off, stage left, tail between my legs.

Here is your opportunity to redeem yourselves with the "Great Nikon in the sky". I am back with G.A.S tatood on my forhead.
My birthday is coming up and i want an 800E.

Convince me i need it.

As my darling hubby tells me....if you've researched it "thoroughly" (I won't use his description for thoroughly....) :O), it'll do what you want, and you want it, you can afford it, you're not going to wish you hadn't done it in six months, then go for it. I typically respond "but I don't NEED it..." and I get the answer "When has that ever stopped us from doing anything..." Go for it. :O)

I'm 85 so I only buy ripe bananas.
I did gleefully buy a D600 and D7100, however.

And the glee has not subsided!

Life is too short! And if the finances are there, then go for it! I had my 3rd open heart surgery hast January and ordered my D7000 from my hospital room. And 8 weeks ago they replaced my pacemaker, I ordered my D300! I have my lovely wife shaking her head but agreeing, how many cameras dose he need, just one more!! Enjoy your life while you can. There is no one in the cemetery glad that they didn't buy a new camera.👍😄

I'm just a student photographer but here is my 2 cents.

To quote a certain photographer: " Where there is light a photograph can be made"

With that said I say go for it. You'll have a new camera body and be the envy of many a student photographer.

your purchase of the 800E is equivalent to my saving up for a Chamonix 8x10 or
a Black arts 8x10

Those cameras are the stuff which my dreams are made out of. LOL

My own feeling is, yes it,s full frame (all hail the full frame God ! ) but unless you want to print every photo half a wall size, why do you need it, but that's different from wanting it ! if money is plentiful, ( not here jealous ) go for it why not ,your a long time dead ! ha ha Graham (siamesecatmanuk )
