Let's go back to the very beginning -- your opening question of this thread.

You are in photography for the enjoyment.
The D800 is one of the very best -- in any league. But there are psychological considerations too.

The enjoyment, the satisfaction, the confidence you will receive working with the very best will also have a subtle effect in the quality of your work. There wiLL be an improvement.

Of course you may well need to upgrade your computer, acquire new lenses, etc., but that will be all part of the development of your creative talents.

Now, put all the technical talk aside. Go out and buy this superb camera.
Fulfill yourself. That is most important.

Pierre

I slunck off, stage left, tail between my legs.

Here is your opportunity to redeem yourselves with the "Great Nikon in the sky". I am back with G.A.S tatood on my forhead.
My birthday is coming up and i want an 800E.

Convince me i need it.

Well, you do not need it for photography, but you need it to be able to say you have the best equipment! Why are you asking us here at the forum? You will not be buying it for us anyway, but for you and your ego just like I do when I buy new camera. If you want it buy it, do not try to find logical excuse to buy it, there is no such thing!

It goes back to what you wrote in that thread, "it isn't what i shoot, it should be about what i do with the images."

If your D7100 images are more than good enough for your needs, there's not much additional need for the D800E images.

The other comment you made that is important is

The D800E would be better for portraits and landscapes. You'll just have to figure out what you want to do with those better pictures. And you'll have to deal with the additional weight.

It's called "moral support," and it's far better than logic. :D

Thats what i wanted to hear.

Of course i want the potential of better images; but most of all i just wanted to hear that it is ok for an otherwise sensible old man to acquire a tool he may never fully master.

Most of the old timers here who shot for a living know that certain cameras or lenses leave a signature on an image. For me, the 800 seems to be one of these, i can't explain what it is but i like the way it captures.

We shouldn't let money control our lives by spending too much. But we also shouldn't let it control our lives by not spending it at all. It's a tool, to be used to first get us what we need and then what we want.

If after some contemplation, you believe that such an item would improve your quality of life, the quality of your art or your general well-being...buy it. If you are not totally convinced you will be better off with it then don't buy it. Sometimes we have unreasonable expectations of the things we add to our lives leading to disappointment. It is a very rare occasion when the purchase of material goods brings complete satisfaction.

You've apparently already convinced yourself you need it even though its been suggested by some that you try to get the best out of the D7100 first. If you want the D800, than by all means get it. Will it improve your photography skills? Will you get better images from it? That really depends on you. If you've fully explored the capabilities of the D7100 and you've researched the D800 properly, I don't think there is anything useful we can add. If we have to convince you that you are making a good decision, than you're probably not ready. The D800 is a superior body, but depending on what and how you shoot, the lenses you use, and the skills you have acquired you may, or may not get better results.

Is it because you need a second camera to put one lens on each?

Do you think you'll be stepping up in resolution? I wonder. If the D7100 were a full frame sensor, it would be a 55mp sensor, so it actually has more res than the D800, although the pixels are smaller. You must convince yourself that you need a full frame camera. What is your reason for a full frame camera?

That's nothing. Let me give you a PO Box to send just $1,400 for a brand new US model D800 - in the box. :D

Old, why do you have such a desire to ask for permission? Or do you need loads of reinforcement?
If you has GAS tattoed on your forehead, just pull the trigger, or get rid of that ill-conceived tattoo! ;-)
