A Challange to Nikon users

Last year i expressed the desire to buy a 600/610 to keep my 7100 company.
All i got in response was: "learn to shoot what you have", "get some glass", "the 7100 is lighter, cheaper and sharper".....
I slunck off, stage left, tail between my legs.
Here is your opportunity to redeem yourselves with the "Great Nikon in the sky". I am back with G.A.S tatood on my forhead.
My birthday is coming up and i want an 800E.
Convince me i need it.

If you have a cell phone, you don't need a D800e. Getting back to reality, if you can afford it, get it. Why? Because you want it, and you'll love using it. Why not get it? Do you want to keep using a lesser camera and keep telling yourself that the images are almost as good?

As my darling hubby tells me....if you've researched it "thoroughly" (I won't use his description for thoroughly....) :O), it'll do what you want, and you want it, you can afford it, you're not going to wish you hadn't done it in six months, then go for it. I typically respond "but I don't NEED it..." and I get the answer "When has that ever stopped us from doing anything..." Go for it. :O)

As you already know, there are many people who will tell you to learn what you already have, or that it is the photographer and not the equipment. Both are true, but it would be rare to see a truly professional photographer using a Kodak Instamatic. Heck, I know how to dig a hole with a shovel, but would much prefer to use a hardened steel showed with a hickory handle, than a plastic beach shovel.

I shoot Canon, but I'll throw in my two pennies. You should buy this camera because you obviously want a new one, and from what Ive read, it's a terrific camera. You get to be alive for only a short period of time, so if that Nikon would bring you some joy, and if you can afford it, what's the harm? I just upgraded from a 5D to a 5D mark III. It can be said that I didn't NEED a new camera, but it sure makes me happy.

I have both Nikon FX and DX and use both (I'm not a pro, just having fun taking photos). Go buy one, you'll like it.

Sounds like me! I never "upgraded " from the D700, but, there is a "look" to FX that I've never been able to describe (through my D7100 is a remarkable camera). Be warned, you may need a computer upgrade to handle a D800/e

If you want more detail in the shots you print to large sizes, or want the flexibility of being able to crop to a greater degree than before (maybe saving you money on a new super-telephoto or something?) then this is certainly the way to go. Be aware that you might also have to upgrade your "darkroom" - more storage at least - to store the much larger files the D800 generates. If I had the coin, I'd get an 800e too - so go ahead and make me jealous!

I didn't NEED one either, but have one (D800E) and love it. Just want to use it more and can't wait for spring.

I agree with most of the previous posters. It's a great camera (I have one and I have never looked back), the IQ is superior, it is heavy (especially with the f2.8 lenses) and it really needs a powerful computer (lots of RAM) and lots of HD storage space for the enormous files you will produce. Without going up to a D4, what else can you ask for?
If you have the finances and the desire - got for it! You will be happy. If you don't will you keep asking yourself: What if I did buy the 800...

It will make every Nikon lens you own perform to its optimum, even the DX ones. You'll have the option of selecting what file size you want to shoot, but with FX i'll bet it will be 36MB. Do have a fast computer and large external drives to store your RAW files. Go for it.
