I slunck off, stage left, tail between my legs.

Here is your opportunity to redeem yourselves with the "Great Nikon in the sky". I am back with G.A.S tatood on my forhead.

I'm still waiting for the wife to redeem herself and say OK, I'm thinking now, why did I even ask her.......... just watch what happens as soon as the refurb's come out.

Just get what's fit your need. I have just got a FX Df body to pair with my old D200. The Df is great for low light shooting which was not possible on the D200. The D800 is a great FX semi-pro camera, but I don't need that much pixel, Df is what I need!

Good luck and Happy New Year!

The 800E is astonishingly good - especially as regards details in under-exposed areas, and the ability to print big. You won't regret it at all.

No one NEEDS a D800. We all want one. Go for it and never look back.

Hmmm... If I had the money I would certainly get one myself. As I love shooting landscapes the D800 is a great camera. The only downsides are you can't skimp on glass or the camera can't perform to it's ability, and the file sizes are rather large so you will need a couple of large hard drives. But if those two are not a big deal then I say go for it! If you decide a few months later you don't like it you can always send it my way. LOL! :)
I think you will like it though.
You are the only one who can answer as to if you "need" it.
Me, I'm a tight wad so when I want more pixels I shoot a spread with my D700 (or D300) and stitch them into a big pano with lots of pixels, sort of a Gigapan effect but not that big. :)
A D800 would be a nice fit for me because I have a stockpile of both CF and SD cards, so if you do also it's a good fit for you to in that regard.
I would ask for one for my birthday but I think my wife would hang on the price. :)
Oh and it's not that important to me but I hear the video it shoots is fantastic.

Coffins don't have pockets.

As my father used to tell me "Money is only good for two things, either you can spend it now or spend it later and since none of us know what the future will held you might as well spend it now when you know you can."

Since photography is not your profession and you don't have to cost justify a camera acquisition just go ahead and buy it.

Enjoy your new D800/e

Jerry

"good - especially as regards details in under-exposed areas"

i shoot a lot of B/W and like my blacks black and whites white so shadow detail is important. Not crazy about noise though.

This nay sayer does seem to have a point.

"D800's moiré is low enough that you'd be unlikely to encounter it in most shooting situations. The D800e on the other hand clearly seems to be a special-purpose model, best used only for things like scientific applications, where the (slightly) improved high-frequency response is needed"

Fortunately my interest is landscape and people.

I believe I would do some research, I think that camera is much more capable then that. Do a PM to MT Shooter.
