Hi Tracey,
Palm trees make wonderful subjects. I stood underneath this one, the sky was a clear deep blue with no clouds. It was at a shopping area in a lovely part of the garden. The shoppers wondered what I was doing on my knees looking up at a tree! Who cares, I was having fun.

That's a great shot Wendy.
I have a photo of me lying on the floor of the federal building in Asheville getting a shot, so I can relate to the curious onlooker comment.

Ignoring the people staring at me taking unusual shots has been one of my biggest challenges. I figure once the shot is taken, I have it forever, so it's worth the temporary discomfort.
Maybe if I got a white lens and made up a phony plastic ID card...
Hello again Tracey, not a critique, but I did notice that your pictures where all taken at what appears to be standing with the camera at head height. It is really intersting to try different angles, get down on the ground and look up under a tree, look at a landscape from a lower level, it can can be a lot of fun and makes it more interesting. Also don't forget the clouds, don't focus so much on the trees that you forget the sky, clouds pop out when you do not even know they are there!

Here is that graph of different IR filters.

I'm just getting started with this, so my advice is from a novice.
If you set a custom White Balance to healthy green grass, you can avoid that red washout.

I made three quick adjustments in PS CS5.
1. Image > Auto Tone
2. Image > Adjustments > Black & White (or use Ctrl-B)
3. Go to the Presets box and select Blue, or some other choice and see what you get.
This is very basic - things I picked up here and there. Still learning.

A white sheet of paper, or one of those white balancing lens caps works well. Its also a good idea to under expose IR, about 2/3 of a stop or so.

Question please, hopefully this 'thread' will keep going.
Do IR pictures have to be in B & W (greyscale)? Some of the ones I have played with in Photoshop can have wonderful ranges of color.
The poodle in the picture - well I made her pink!
Just a thought

Thanks Wendy, I will try that too.
I really want to get a handle on this IR stuff in the next few weeks. I am going to Rome in Feb. and think this could be awesome there!
You really want to see it?

Architecture, landscapes, cemeteries, street photography, and of course 'out the window' aerials on the way to/from Rome. Here's a link to my aerial photos thread:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-13759-1.html Mostly color but a few IR over there. IR really cuts through atmospheric haze.
Don't get so wrapped up shooting IR you forget to get your visible light shots, that sometimes happens to me!
Also you might want to do some IR & visible light comparison shots standing in the same place and capturing an image in both formats.
When you get back start a Rome thread, I'm sure you'll have a ton of photos to share. In fact you might start a Rome open post thread to give you ideas on what to shoot when you get there.
I love UH, it inspires you to take photographs and then gives you a place to share them!
Looking forward to images from Rome,
Eric
