I subscribe to the famous quote "F/8 and be there." That tells me to try to be intentional when looking for a good shot (although serendipity comes into play more often than not) and also that it would be a good idea to have a camera with me at all times. While my Samsung Galaxy S3 takes pretty good everyday pictures, you never know when that once in a lifetime scene will appear just around the next bend. I always have my D5200, lenses and tripod with me, covered up in the back of my pickup, since I also subscribe to "out of sight, out of mind" to discourage hot hands. I have a cheap Nikon p&s just in case the big rig fails. That's my 2 cents... Merry Christmas everybody!

About a year ago I switched from Canon T3i to micro-four-thirds GX1. The Canon was so unweildy that I took it almost nowhere. Now I take the GX1 (and my recently-acquired G1) every time I leave the house. The both fit nicely into the center console of my SUV. A day-pack with with four additional lenses & "other stuff" sits on the passenger seat or on the rear floorboards. I've typically got a tripod in the back seat, too. I do not take photos every time I leave the house; but I am prepared to take photos every time.

I'm really sold on (and fond of) the micro-four-thirds systems and the way they've made it much easier for me to be always prepared for the unexpected photo opportunity.

Me too. It rides shotgun in the passenger seat, or if my wife is with me (most of the time) it rides lens up on top of the beverage holders.

iphone is with me 95% of time. My other camera(s) are usually within arms reach, or slung over my shoulder. I usually keep them in a camera bag ready to go, with spare batteries charged and lenses mounted. One camera usually has my 12-60 zoom, the other usually has my 20 or 45 prime. Spare lenses are in lens pouches that I attach to my larger bags. My manual focus lenses are usually in a case on a top shelf that are primarily used for special occasions. Tripod is stored in basement, monopod is near my other gear. There's usually a flash sitting on a bookshelf near the extra lenses.

I should be more organized.

Well, I guess I will have to double my fleet. I only have four cameras. I carry one in the car most of the time, always when I travel. It sits in a small camera bag in front of the console between the passenger and driver seat, very handy.

I keep my Sony cybershot in my purse at all times. My Nikon is in my bag with everything ready to go if I am going out for a particular shoot.

Thanks very much, glad you liked that iPhone shot.
No special lens adaptor or anything was used for this photo but... I don't use the regular camera built into the phone.
I DL'd ProCamera and use that instead of the phone's camera, it's much nicer.

I have a point and shoot in my car all the time. It's small and easy to use. If I think I might need my Nikon D5100, I take it with me, for a special shooting trip or just because I have a premonition that something wonderful is going to happen.
If I'm leaving the car for any length of time I carry the Nikon with me (on my sling strap, next to my body) for safety. It's a heavy combo with the 18-300 lens but you just don't leave it in the car in the car on a busy street or a dark parking lot. If I'm around here (very small town.) I slip it into my empty foam, insulated food container in the trunk where it can't be seen. So far so good.
Right now, during Christmas, I leave my camera home...for short trips. This will be the time I see a red tail hawk land on the country road where I live. It's inevitable that something wonderful will happen when you don't have your "good" camera with you. That's when you just take it all in... without the camera and celebrate what is happening.

This happens to me a lot. I recently walked out the back door at our farm house when I line of six red tail hawks soared directly over me. I did as a Native American tour guide on the Hopi reservation said: Take Indian pictures: Look, See, Remember.

This would happen to me all the time, since I don't generally walk around with any camera. But it doesn't, because there aren't any hawks where I walk. :-(
