let the parents keep the kids. they screwed them up this far, potty trained finally at seven, geez.... what did they do when they went to school??? buy yourself something you want and keep running... i'm sure it wouldn't be fun for any of you as i am betting they don't give two hoots about anything but themselves.

Might be a good experience for everyone!
I'd say picture taking trip a great idea. But make it fairly short at least the first time, and get them inexpensive point and shoots (that fit their hands) and then let them make all the decisions of what pictures to take. Its hard to say at that age....they may love it or they may be totally bored. But one way or the other, attention from Grandpa will be welcome.
Go for it. "A man's reach should exceed his grasp."

I think a SX50 might be a bit much. Maybe something with a 10x zoom would seem more realistic. and probably more reach that what you will take along.
Why did Chevy Chase "Family Vacation" just flash in my head ?
Go for it Grampy, you just might get a movie deal on it !
Those cameras may be at Good will for a reason other than just collecting dust somewhere ! check them out good
Wow, I'd LOVE to find an SX50 for $125!!
What's wrong with 'crazy'? I took my own kids camping at an early age. 2 boys,1 girl. Took them fishing early, also. Gave them each a Kodak throw-away one trip and they came home with some surprising pictures. All they ever learned from these things was: The beauty around them, respect for others, patience, and self-reliance. Go figure!
keep up with the times gramps get them iphones . the number one camera in the world. LoL.
Give them a little time. I have a granddaughter who is 11 and grew up with most of that electronic stuff. She'll drop it all in a minute to go out & ride the horses, and she WANTS a camera this year.
I say go for it, but with a point and shoot and you might want to consider taking them one at a time.

Hi Bad Grandpa,
I'm not familiar with the cameras but I think your idea is fantastic. As an aunt who sees the same behavior from her nephews, I absolutely agree, get them away from the bubble and let them live a little. Who cares if each comes back with a bruise, if they enjoyed it that's all that mattered. As a teacher, I think the idea of cameras is fantastic. As I stated I'm not familiar with the choice you made, but I do know there are cameras out there that are digital and designed for younger children, they can drop them on the ground and in water and they're good to go. Again as the teacher in me they could take pictures and write a sentence or two about the photos, make it a learning experience too, just get them cool notebooks and pens/pencils/crayons whichever they choose. You could even model this for them and make it a secret grandpa code adventure. I say whatever camera you choose will be great and I think this is a terrific idea. I wish you were my grandpa when I was younger, it sounds like a blast.
No longer Bad Grandpa, but Cool Grandpa,
Laura
