I have to agree when I first joined I knew everyone and I followed every single post. There were over 4,000 posts in the last 24 hours. No way to keep up with that many, but I have a few sections that I look at everything in.

Good point. I had no idea of the volume.
Personally I am impressed with how graciously criticism is offered and accepted on this forum.

First, I'd like to say congratulations to all who wanted the new gallery. I am looking forward to it!! I'm sure it will solve a lot of issues that have been plaquing this forum.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed that there aren't as many replies to posts as there were before all this started. There were several people who would reply to almost every post even if it was just a smiley face or thumbs up; I'm no longer seeing some of those people. Maybe they feel their replies aren't appreciated. I have also noticed that there were people who posted something almost everyday and they aren't any more. Maybe they feel that what they were trying to share wasn't appreciated. I think that while trying to make improvements to the forum feelings have (I hope, inadvertantly) been hurt. That isn't right! Everyone should be able to post without fear of hurtful comments and unwanted criticism.

This is a big forum with room for everyone.

There are those that post who only want c & c which you will soon have. There are those that are just learning and don't want the harsh c & c but just a gentle nudge in the right direction. There are some that just want to share little pieces of their lives with their UHH family.

There is room enough for all!!!

I am disappointed that some who are excellent photographers have stopped replying to the latter two categories I mentioned. Could you spare a little of your time to give a thumbs up or "great set" to those people? Some just like knowing their photo was viewed and appreciated for what ever it was. There is no need to be cruel in any category. If you really don't like a post or photo, instead of being rude, just close it and go on to the next. There is absolutely no reason to be cruel, even if c & c is asked for.

I read a post this morning where someone tried something new; it wasn't a great photo and I'm sure they didn't expect it to be hung on a gallery wall but probably would have just liked someone to notice what they had tried. What I saw instead was a rather harsh reply. C & C had not been asked for. So, now what will happen. Will the person who posted the photo stop trying new things? Will he just stop posting his photos? Will he leave the forum feeling he has no place here? Is that the way he should be treated?

There have been a lot of people leave in the last few weeks for various reasons. Some because they felt this forum was too "snapshottish" and some because it was to harsh. I hope that this new gallery will allow all of them to return and enjoy the gallery in which they are most comfortable without wondering if they will be insulted or hurt. I also hope that those in the stronger gallery will spend a little time with the snap shooters to encourage them whether they are looking to improve or to just share a little of their lives.

Personally, I look forward to both galleries. I always want to learn and improve in whatever I do so I will spend time in the c & c to do just that. I will also enjoy just looking at photos of someone's pet or grandchildren or something they found that day they want to share.

This should be an enjoyable place to spend time whether you are here to learn or just share a little of yourself.

Please try to make it enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you for spending a little of your time to read what I have written. Please, think about what I have written.

Have a good day or evening!!!

will there be a new section to this forum or a totally new site? To be honest, I used to post regularly, but lost intrest for various reasons including being yelled at and finding a lot of stuff that has not interested me. However that is good for those that are. I by no means am an expert photographer. I wanted to learn more. So if you be willing to indulge me, could someone tell me briefly the objective of the new section please?

luvmypets, I too thank you for your letter. I think it is well written, timely and appropriate.

It seems there have been some who are unable to accept that some are "just not getting it" and they ask. Considering the derisive response that some have given asking takes courage and seeing those responses is certainly discouraging. Newbies ask because they don't know what to expect, those who have been here are likely not to ask because they know they will get - "read the manual", "google it" or something not as bland.

Again thanks for your thoughts and I hope it gives some others something to consider

:( so how do I subscribe to the forums im interested in? I've been using the search engine to answer my own questions. If I can just follow what I'm interested in I wouldn't have to spend so much time searching and more time reading and shooting. Thank you!

Click on "Home" then go down to "All Sections" and look through the full list. You can subscribe on any that are of interest, then those are the only ones that will show up when you click on "Newest Topics"

To subscribe to a certain section, go to the home page, click on the header for "all sections", it will open up a list of all the sections, and in a column to the right you can subscribe or unsubscribe to whatever interests you. I hope this helps. In case no one has said it before - Welcome to UHH

Well said! I've enjoyed UHH for the discussions relative to technology and technique. I don't always reply or add comments to photos but will make an effort to in the future.

With no local photo clubs to participate in, having an outlet to share ones newest photos is invaluable and the comments encourage more learning and exploration. Also, the amazing variety of subjects and themes captured daily is inspiration to continue doing the same.

Also, there are precious few sites where members actively search out other sites with photographic information and share their addresses freely.

Luvmypets, thank you for "cluing me and others in" as to what is going on. I didn't see a notice, or get any previous word on this myself, but that's not unusual.

I try to hit UHH every day, but decided long ago that some of it goes somewhere that I don't know about and will never see. The reason I came to that conclusion is that back when I posted photos I NEVER saw one that I posted appear on this board that comes to me and that I am looking at now. Oh they went somewhere. But they didn't appear on what I got. The reason that I know that they went somewhere is that I received responses to my postings. And there were lots of responses to some of my photos and questions, but they appeared on a board that I didn't see until I responded to a notice that there were responses.

I still remember the first photos that I designated for the gallery, that were of my granddaughter and her intended before their wedding. Some pro landed on me with both feet asking why I didn't take that crack behind them on the red barn out with post processing! Well I don't have PP, and my humble beginning was shot full of holes just like that. I kept posting photos though, at different times of the day hoping I would get the timing right to get to a broader audience, but no luck. Then something happened that my shots just would not go anymore, so I gave that up to my lack of expertise, and just began commenting and trying to encourage after that.

This board has been a world of help to me regarding cameras, equipment, and learning composition, through both discussion and links, and I thank everyone for sharing so I could soak it up! I have, and still am going through an "evolution" of cameras. UHH has been very helpful here too, and it has been a world of fun!

There are a number of posters that were on here when I started, but are gone now for various reasons, most legitimate, but I miss them greatly. It seemed like some were very talented and just decided "I don't have to take this." or "I don't have time for this nonsense anymore." I for one am sad that some have felt that UHH was not for them and have left. I have tried to keep in touch with one or two through PMs but that has not been too successful.

Soooo, if there are going to be changes, bring them on. I'll sit back and observe and see what they are like for a while as things shake out. Thanks everyone for your encouragement and help in the past!

Bob. I agree with you 100% I got jumped big time once over a post I answered a while back. Even was called a nasty name. If it had not been for all the great people on here and 40 years of hard knocks in the photography world I would have hit the delete button on this site. I can just imagine what a new person in photography and trying to ask an honest question would think.

This is a very good topic, and I for one appreciate it being posted to give us all a chance to air our opinions on the subjects. I am one of the ones who no longer posts photos not because I don't like any certain type of replies, but for 2 other reasons: After JoeF reported the theft of his photos I became paranoid about the misuse of anyone's work being stolen. Mine are by no means awe-inspiring like his or many others here, but it makes me sick to think of them being posted here or anywhere on the internet for whatever reason. If you are trying to make a career with your work it may come back to haunt you later down the road.
The reason I don't reply often is because the forum is so big, with so much to learn and see that it takes me 3 hours sometimes to read it all and I don't want to miss a thing, but I have health problems and have no business sitting that long but I am driven to see every photo and get every bit of information I can and can't drag myself away!
I have been disgusted with some who feel they are "above" the rest of us and yet continue to tune in. They seriously damage the forum with that attitude and some days I just can't take the time to weed through their attitude to find replies from the ones who can genuinely help those who need it so I will flip past theirs and go on to the rest, sometimes missing what might have been helpful to me later in that thread.
For the most part the kind hearted and caring folks here by far outnumber the big headed know it alls, and I really appreciate them more than you will ever know, along with the wonderful folks who run this forum. Thank you all!

Hi, I am a few days new and have delighted in looking through the
gallery and have been very impressed and sometimes overwhelmed
at how beautiful the photography is. I have tried to leave the comment of how nice something was a couple of times but have
not figured how to do that yet...as far as crit, I am 69 years old, a
1968 Brooks graduate -- I am very familiar with "tough" and some-
times "ugly and discouraging" crits. Having spent over 40 years in
the advertising/commercial area in the midwest I have come to
deeply appreciate others photography work and personally have very little negative crit -- instead, appreciation. Crit basically means
you should be like me instead of expressing you ! I appreciate the
gallery and look forward to seeing it every day, Thank you very much for creatiing this wonderful site, and glad I was fortunate
enough to stumble upon it! Thanks again and God Bless, Roger M. Short (romosho@cox.net)

I totally agree. I think you'll find that all forums have nice people, not so nice people, and troublemakers. I found the worst examples in religious and political forums. For the most part people here are nice and very helpful. But there are those who just want to stir the pot or show their imagined superiority. Best to ignore them.

To wISOr:

Thank you for this comment . Being a new member I love this site, the information and photos. As a new member I felt it was not my place to comment until reading this letter. Each time I logged on to read a post where a question was asked, instead of (no answer or an explanation) someone or ones would rip the person apart for committing what they thought was breaking the guidelines of the Forum. Sure made meant to post.

If I have overstepped my bounds, forgive me. Just the observations of a new commer.
