I totally agree with Country Mama.... Without "speciality forums", many of us who started even earlier would not find a place for our specific photographic interest. The Macro Forum began around Jan 24, 2012. That's my area of interest-- and the only one I subscribe to. That's the key: if you have no interest is a specific "sub forum", just don't subscribe to it.
The other forums I belong to have even more categories, which I find useful.

Thank you, LoneRangeFinder for taking the time to read my letter and to comment. I, too, have sections I subscribe to and some I don't. I found what I thought fit me style and went from there. I don't have time to read everything but I try to read and comment on as many as I can and I try to learn something from all. Sometimes a picture will just make me smile and thats all it needs to do. Some make me think about something I want to try or may even bring back a memory. Some I don't like, I just go to the next. There is enough diversity here that everyone should find something they are interested in or enjoy.

And what LoneRangeFinder said about having specialty forums for particular interests makes the most sense. I've never understood why Wahawk thinks having a lot of sub-forums is a problem :) Once you've subscribed to what interests you, if you use "newest topics," you don't even have to click to the individual forums. It's all right there in one spot.

Thank you, Linda from Maine, for spending a little of you time to read my letter and to share your thoughts. I, too, am looking forward to the c & c section. I've thought about the fact that you will get to see how others view something; possibly a whole new perspective you haven't thought of. I have also decided it would be fun to decide what my comments would be and see who agrees, and who disagrees. Having the different sections will also help if you only feel like looking at one section. If I come home tired I may not want to read c & c, I may just want to look at animal posts and I will be able to go right to the section I want.

Great letter Dodie, You did a great job writing it. Looks like a lot of people agree with you! And yes this is suppose to be a fun site. What one person make think is a bad photo the person who took it posted it for a reason. If you see a picture you do not like no one is forcing you to look at it. I agree with you close it and go to the next picture. I know myself I am far from being a great or even a good photographer but I enjoy taking the pictures, yes I do have stories to go with my pictures. Life is too short to be so judgmental all the time. Enjoy the pictures posted.
Thanks for your letter Dodie! :)

Thank you for your time and thoughts, Mary. We all have a reason for the pictures we take whether its for art or memories we should be able to share with those who will also enjoy them. My photos are my memories of places I've been, people I've known, things I've done. One day, those memories will be all I have and I want every detail I can pack in to them. I'll be able to look at a picture I posted here and say that I shared it with people from all over the world. On this forum I have seen photos of places I will never go but am seeing in thru someone else's eyes and if they have a story to share even better.

I share the stories and tell about the pictures I see to friends, co-workers and customers. One customer has lizards and I told him about pictures posted of his variety of lizard in the wild. He wanted to see it so I went to the store lap top and found it for him to see. He was really tickled to see a tree full of those lizards. Another life touched by someones snapshot.

Thank you, Bevman, for taking the time to read my post and for the thumbs up added to GAH1944's comment. I appreciate the thumbs up even if there are those that don't. To me it means a lot!

Would be interesting to see how many users are STILL HERE instead of the count that shows on the Home Page since they do not allow people to 'delete' their account or 'remove' themselves from the User List. The 38,000+ is NOT an accurate figure since it still includes the ones that have left.

I know that I will NOT be posting any pictures and will very RARELY make any comments, and then only for a very few selected users. If it was possible to "delete" my account and my old posts, I would.

I am sure there aren't 38,000+ any more but you never know. Yes, some people leave but others join. I'm sorry you don't want to post you photos any more. I looked at some of them. I liked your lily pictures and your baseball pictures. I'm sure you have photos that others would like to see, but I do think you should do what makes you feel comfortable.

Who cares how many replies to posts there are? Why does anybody even try to count them?

The numbers are already a part of the listing of posts. I assume that information is critical to prospective advertisers.

This forum has become so large that I am sure I miss many things that would interest me. I now only scan the list of topics quickly to see if anything jumps out. It become a question of how much time do you want to spend on your computer.

First, I'd like to say congratulations to all who wanted the new gallery. I am looking forward to it!! I'm sure it will solve a lot of issues that have been plaquing this forum.

The last entry made in the posting Alaska left UHH, was this :-

My tuppence worth : Very few of my pictures get critiqued but I usually get 'nice' feedback, as in 'nice shot' which pleases me, as someone has enjoyed looking at my image. I found UHH because I enjoy looking at images on the net.
Some times I post an amusing or interesting shot. A humourous or interested comment would suffice.

"I have to agree that "great shot", "nice set" etc are pointless comments he is right there"
The quote from JR1. (I have no axe to grind JR1, just the quote is relevant).

In the (almost) complete lack of critique on the pics I posted, I then have to assume that ;--
a) Nobody looks at them
b) Nobody likes them
C) So bad they don't warrant critique
d) So good they don't warrant critique.

Intro to Photo gallery :- "show your pics for critique, general advice, or just for fun."
Am I perhaps in the wrong topic?

It is sad that a member has left. His work was so interesting.

I accept things have moved on and I am NOT stirring, but the above mentioned Intro to Photo Gallery is ignored in most of the comments. My point is that if we lose the spirit of UHH as we seem to have in the original photo gallery, it doesn't matter how many refinements we make, we will end up losers

I don't know if anyone else has noticed that there aren't as many replies to posts as there were before all this started. There were several people who would reply to almost every post even if it was just a smiley face or thumbs up; I'm no longer seeing some of those people. Maybe they feel their replies aren't appreciated. I have also noticed that there were people who posted something almost everyday and they aren't any more. Maybe they feel that what they were trying to share wasn't appreciated. I think that while trying to make improvements to the forum feelings have (I hope, inadvertantly) been hurt. That isn't right! Everyone should be able to post without fear of hurtful comments and unwanted criticism.

This is a big forum with room for everyone.

There are those that post who only want c & c which you will soon have. There are those that are just learning and don't want the harsh c & c but just a gentle nudge in the right direction. There are some that just want to share little pieces of their lives with their UHH family.

There is room enough for all!!!

I am disappointed that some who are excellent photographers have stopped replying to the latter two categories I mentioned. Could you spare a little of your time to give a thumbs up or "great set" to those people? Some just like knowing their photo was viewed and appreciated for what ever it was. There is no need to be cruel in any category. If you really don't like a post or photo, instead of being rude, just close it and go on to the next. There is absolutely no reason to be cruel, even if c & c is asked for.

I read a post this morning where someone tried something new; it wasn't a great photo and I'm sure they didn't expect it to be hung on a gallery wall but probably would have just liked someone to notice what they had tried. What I saw instead was a rather harsh reply. C & C had not been asked for. So, now what will happen. Will the person who posted the photo stop trying new things? Will he just stop posting his photos? Will he leave the forum feeling he has no place here? Is that the way he should be treated?

There have been a lot of people leave in the last few weeks for various reasons. Some because they felt this forum was too "snapshottish" and some because it was to harsh. I hope that this new gallery will allow all of them to return and enjoy the gallery in which they are most comfortable without wondering if they will be insulted or hurt. I also hope that those in the stronger gallery will spend a little time with the snap shooters to encourage them whether they are looking to improve or to just share a little of their lives.

Personally, I look forward to both galleries. I always want to learn and improve in whatever I do so I will spend time in the c & c to do just that. I will also enjoy just looking at photos of someone's pet or grandchildren or something they found that day they want to share.

This should be an enjoyable place to spend time whether you are here to learn or just share a little of yourself.

Please try to make it enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you for spending a little of your time to read what I have written. Please, think about what I have written.

Have a good day or evening!!!

Here Here!! Well said! Sometimes I get tired of reading the negative posts and smart alec remarks and have to just turn it off and walk away. It can be disgusting for me at times and have contemplated looking for another forum. I am no pro by any means and have learned a lot from some of the posts and replies about equipment and styles of shooting.

Nice article and thanks for posting...

Thank you for writing this. I have been a professional photographer for 40 years. I love helping other people with their questions. I have had many UHH members answer my questions. This is a great place for learning, expressing opinions, sharing photos and stories. I have made new friends all over the world on here.
I think most members are so willing to share their experiences and knowledge. It made me feel great and confident to re-explore non digital photography when I bought my antique camera. It took me a month to get the guts to post a photo from that thing. I was thrilled to get a thumbs up and no criticism. Even after 40 years facing clients with my work my stomach flips when I post on here for fear of getting it ripped to schreads like many have in the past. I hope this changes. I look forward to our members coming back. I miss their posts, like Roger Hicks.

Thanks for your welcome comment, Luvmypets. I agree with you. It takes no more effort to try to write a kind remark than it does to compose a vitriolic comment. Nobody wants to slapped down for showing their photograph. Newcomers need encouragement not nasty criticisms. Constructive criticisms are great but vindictive is not necessary.

BTW, sorry I got here so late.

hi everyone...i know that a lot of replies dropped off....i did notice that many times when i read some of the threads that after a few initial responses some of the members got off the track and downright silly at times..and yes i did find some got a bit rude..many were helpful but some got a bit too high on their horses..i do read some of the interesting threads and learned a few things each day..but i stopped getting into the conversations because i felt that at times i would get knocked for a loop..your letter nailed a lot of what was going on..

When you signed up Wahawk there was a fraction of the members that there now are. Without the different interest sections photos are buried and hard to find. With the different sections you can participate in it is more like a friendly small forum. I can't even imagine trying to wade through all the photos if there was only one section. I have to agree when I first joined I knew everyone and I followed every single post. There were over 4,000 posts in the last 24 hours. No way to keep up with that many, but I have a few sections that I look at everything in.

Good point. I had no idea of the volume.
Personally I am impressed with how graciously criticism is offered and accepted on this forum.
