First, I'd like to say congratulations to all who wanted the new gallery. I am looking forward to it!! I'm sure it will solve a lot of issues that have been plaquing this forum.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed that there aren't as many replies to posts as there were before all this started. There were several people who would reply to almost every post even if it was just a smiley face or thumbs up; I'm no longer seeing some of those people. Maybe they feel their replies aren't appreciated. I have also noticed that there were people who posted something almost everyday and they aren't any more. Maybe they feel that what they were trying to share wasn't appreciated. I think that while trying to make improvements to the forum feelings have (I hope, inadvertantly) been hurt. That isn't right! Everyone should be able to post without fear of hurtful comments and unwanted criticism.

This is a big forum with room for everyone.

There are those that post who only want c & c which you will soon have. There are those that are just learning and don't want the harsh c & c but just a gentle nudge in the right direction. There are some that just want to share little pieces of their lives with their UHH family.

There is room enough for all!!!

I am disappointed that some who are excellent photographers have stopped replying to the latter two categories I mentioned. Could you spare a little of your time to give a thumbs up or "great set" to those people? Some just like knowing their photo was viewed and appreciated for what ever it was. There is no need to be cruel in any category. If you really don't like a post or photo, instead of being rude, just close it and go on to the next. There is absolutely no reason to be cruel, even if c & c is asked for.

I read a post this morning where someone tried something new; it wasn't a great photo and I'm sure they didn't expect it to be hung on a gallery wall but probably would have just liked someone to notice what they had tried. What I saw instead was a rather harsh reply. C & C had not been asked for. So, now what will happen. Will the person who posted the photo stop trying new things? Will he just stop posting his photos? Will he leave the forum feeling he has no place here? Is that the way he should be treated?

There have been a lot of people leave in the last few weeks for various reasons. Some because they felt this forum was too "snapshottish" and some because it was to harsh. I hope that this new gallery will allow all of them to return and enjoy the gallery in which they are most comfortable without wondering if they will be insulted or hurt. I also hope that those in the stronger gallery will spend a little time with the snap shooters to encourage them whether they are looking to improve or to just share a little of their lives.

Personally, I look forward to both galleries. I always want to learn and improve in whatever I do so I will spend time in the c & c to do just that. I will also enjoy just looking at photos of someone's pet or grandchildren or something they found that day they want to share.

This should be an enjoyable place to spend time whether you are here to learn or just share a little of yourself.

Please try to make it enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you for spending a little of your time to read what I have written. Please, think about what I have written.

Have a good day or evening!!!

There are several regular poster who left before the new gallery was mentioned. Just before. Some left because of rude hurtful comments others because they were tired of the "good photo" comments given too freely. They are probably who you are missing.
I for one think as you do that there is room for both and I intend to post in both. I have found friends on here that I like to share things with, without getting a C&C. But there are other images that I would like help with and they tend to get buried in the gallery.

Are these 2 new galleries a result of Brent Harders post a few weeks ago? And, what are the new galleries called? Just curious. Thanks...

Very well put...thanks for taking the time to write this. ;-)I believe positive reinforcement helps two people...those that give it and those that receive it.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to write this, luvmypets! I agree with everything you said. I for one plan to continue to give smiley faces and compliments to people. Encouragement and recognition is good and I certainly appreciate it when my photos get some. If someone takes the trouble to give me a "nice" or a thumbs up, it makes me happy. I will give an opinion on a photo if c&c is requested, too, if I think I have something useful to say. There should be room for everyone here. It's a busy site and takes a lot of time to look at everything and make comments, and I don't even have enough time to give a smiley face to everything that I enjoy seeing, but I love this site and will do what I can to make thoughtful and wholesome contributions. That is my pledge. :-P :-P

luvmypets that was very well composed with many good points, thank you for the time it took to pen and post. Perhaps those who left will return after a short reprise to find the new board, we can always hope. :-)

I'm curious how the OP, or anyone else, keeps track of all the people "leaving" UHH, and what their reasons are. How does one keep up with how many posts a person makes, let alone when they use smiley faces or thumbs up/down?

Who cares how many replies to posts there are? Why does anybody even try to count them?

There is no need for ANOTHER section! I am one who has stopped posting pictures and very seldom comment anymore because of all those who insist on breaking up the Photo Gallery to "specialize" the posts, like the "Close Up" and "HDR" forums.
I will not be participating in any "new" sections and as this Forum in general is breaking up and not anywhere close to what it was when I signed up, I will be looking and commenting much less often.

When you signed up Wahawk there was a fraction of the members that there now are. Without the different interest sections photos are buried and hard to find. With the different sections you can participate in it is more like a friendly small forum. I can't even imagine trying to wade through all the photos if there was only one section. I have to agree when I first joined I knew everyone and I followed every single post. There were over 4,000 posts in the last 24 hours. No way to keep up with that many, but I have a few sections that I look at everything in.

I was not a member when the forum was small, and I've been confused &overwhelmed by the breakneck pace on the gallery section since I've been here so don't participate there much. I do follow this section which kind of makes sense and the pp section which does make sense but has sort of limped along. It seems to me as an outsider that what worked to get the site going has possibly been outgrown, and that what you're seeing is natural growing pains that must be dealt with. With such a large membership this site can really become great, but only you find some ways to direct the traffic. One stop light works fine in a town of 300 but when it grows to 30,000 you're going to have problems. I followed, with interest, the dialogue that grew out of the discussion for the new section, on both sides. It seems like this effort was handled in a healthy way from a systems-change perspective. Everybody got to speak their mind, and as a result, something is going to happen that may offer an opportunity to a group of people who would have likely left anyway and another group that may be floundering around out there like I have been. Whether it works as planned remains to be seen and depends much on the members.

Luv, I think if the rules were followed, much of this could be avoided. But, as with much in life, rules are for someone else, not ME. I only break them a little bit, on occasion.
As for good fotos/bad fotos, there are many just starting out, and many long time shooters as well, that feel their fotos are very good, no matter how bad. But we all started once, no matter how advanced we may now be, we have all walked in those shoes.
And, as for the jerks...... our schools, our workplaces and our neighborhoods are full of them. So it's no surprise that they spill into this forum.
As for the new gallery, hopefully it will not be polluted just as the other galleries have been. Since its the same pool of participants, including the jerks, we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that all behave themselves.

Just a suggestion to help keep it simple while you are learning the ropes. Find a few people that you really like their work and put them on your buddy list. Then start watching what they post. Start commenting on their work and get to know them. This will keep it manageable. I follow a few sections and then watch my buddy list. Not everyday but once every few weeks I go through and see what they have posted that I have missed. It is a lot less overwhelming that way.
If you have a specific interest use the search feature.
Make sure you are posting also so we can get to know you.

I totally agree with Country Mama.... Without "speciality forums", many of us who started even earlier would not find a place for our specific photographic interest. The Macro Forum began around Jan 24, 2012. That's my area of interest-- and the only one I subscribe to. That's the key: if you have no interest is a specific "sub forum", just don't subscribe to it.
The other forums I belong to have even more categories, which I find useful.
