The first one blew me away too, totally threw the rules of 9 out the window.
the second I agree the sunlight didnt look natural. way to dark near the bottom, totally loosing the art of human form with the body, ( Try IR, Try Nude,
The third was good,
the baby on the saddle you got it girl, straighten your camera out stop shooting upward. Couldnt have asked those horses to pose any better just straighten your camera out some.

PSP isnt as expensive as you think especially if this is what your going to do to pick up extra $$ here and there. It will pay for itself, I dont have the expensive adobe applications.
I also live on fixed income, forced retired military so I hear ya.

I have been a member here since Oct and I havent posted a lot but I have been reading, following suggestions given to others and researching and challenging myself with different ways to do things that have been suggested here. Try that there is an abundance of information here.

If Mr. Billy is willing to help you or any of these fine folks grab it education is out there you just have to look. Heck maybe I will have photoshop one day too.

What's funny about that horse shot, I was in the fence with them while the mommy was getting baby ready. I couldn't get those horses to pay attention to me at all! But as soon as we put that baby down... bam! They were very interested! LOL I love those horses :)

Thank you for your input. I am always open to advice and suggestions. If I had to do the maternity shot over, I would do it differently. It was right after I got my camera! Oh well.. live and learn!

Does anyone have any advice on how to try to get a photo published? Where or what channels to go through?

Check the libraries and book stores for books on the subject. They will give you the names and contact information of agents. Study up on what they expect, make contact, show your work and let them do the marketing. This will free you up to shoot more photos. Most are in large cities ie New York, etc.
Good luck

I sent a couple pictures to Birds and Blooms and one was published in the May issue. Never expected that.

Ok. Here is the info lots of you have asked for.

When I had photos publlished in the paper, I submitted one and had one submitted for me. The steps I followed to get published this way were easy for me but may be harder for some. I had no name of who to contact so I took the following steps.
1. Went on the paper's website to look at who is in charge of what section of the paper
2. Once I found the correct section and person's name, I then wrote up an email with the attached photo and sent it to that person.
3. Periodically checked my email for a follow up email or two for updates
4. Finally recieved an update email from the paper telling me of a possible print time for my submission and asking me to keep my eyes out
5. Keep my eyes out for the paper for the next two days incase the day they tell you does not have it.
**Notice: If not published within 2 days of time told to you then check with them to find out why it wasn't.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as magazines go, I had a photo that was published but it was submitted by the FD as a thank you for my work and support to them. I have now been asked by numerous personnel and the chief to submit more photos to the trade magazines for the fire service. For this I will be going through the following steps:
1. I will be able to get a print copy of the magazines to look at to see what type of photos they have in them
2. I will check to see who is in charge of what section (some magazines actually print this info in them)
3. Some have photo submission guidelines printed right in them so I can follow them.
4. If you can't get the print magazine but know they have a website, check that out out as it should have the submit guidelines on it. Some of the magazines that I am looking at have limited info in the print editions so I have checked the websites already to find the information.
5. Write up a little caption for each photo sent so it can be considered for publication with the photo (This is major if you have photos from a major event)
6. If this is your first time submitting to them, let them know how you found out about them and why you wanted to submit to them.
7. Submit your info. and photos and wait for a confirmation or approximate publication time.
8. Keep your eyes out for the publication.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
***Something to keep in mind: ***
1. Not all publications will pay you so do not be expecting this, but just be happy your name and your work is getting out. (The reason for this is due to many papers being in a small market or town and can't afford to pay as well as some small magazines)
2. If they print the photo without your name, contact them immediately to get it corrected and Do Not submit any further information or photos to them until they correct the mistake.
3. If they do not correct it, do not do any more business with them and also let people know what happened so others don't have it happen to them since it is unprofessional of the papers and magazines to do this to them.
4. You could also talk to press reporters from the papers when they are out and about to get to know them and make contacts that way to make it easier to get the information of who to submit info to and also make some friends by doing this.
I have already begun doing this and it is helping.

*I hope the information that I have posted here helps as some people may have different means and methods of getting published and may not go this route. Please let me know if this helps. Thanks

Hey fellow Hoosier; try your local paper. Take pictures of events; pix of club meetings, new officers. any thing with community interest. But getting YOUR pix in the paper is really different.
I had two or three shows, most recently in our local library. But these don't put bread on the table. Try your county fair. work up to the Indiana State Fair.
The Hoosier Farmer magazine of Indiana Farm Bureau accepts cute pix from Members.
Just some thoughts.

Faith's Mom:
In the past 20 years or so, I have had hundred's of my pix published in magazines. But then--I was the Managing Editor; reckon that had anything to do with it ?
