Here is a picture of a friend's beautiful Standard Poodle. I was asked to take pictures of her and could not resisit seeing her in IR. Her coloring is a soft dark silver. Her name is Vienna.

A regular visible light camera has a strong IR filter over the sensor that blocks IR light from reaching the sensor. A modded camera has that filter removed and a new filter, one that allows IR light to get to the sensor, is placed in the camera. It is then possible to shoot IR without a filter, but you are no longer able to shoot visible light. Having a camera modded is a serious commitment to a special niche of photography. I recommend finding a regular visible light camera that is sensitive to IR light, several are listed on this thread, and using a filter, the Hoya R72 is my favorite, and trying it out before having a camera modded.

I have heard of some folks getting the required parts and modding their own cameras, but I am not that handy.

Oh goodness it is now 46 degrees outside, my plants are covered, the cats are all looking pitiful, the dogs think we are cruel and heartless to make then use the bathroom outside. Oh well, this is why we put up with the summer, but it does not mean you have to enjoy it!

Do IR pictures have to be in B & W (greyscale)? Some of the ones I have played with in Photoshop can have wonderful ranges of color.
The poodle in the picture - well I made her pink!

On page two of this thread I have a color IR photo. I like B&W because it is quick and easy. Color is very interesting, but very time consuming, at least for me. Other IR filters than the R72 will give you more color to play with, but be careful you may end up with several IR filters to choose from, you have been warned ;-).

Here's a few color ones from me.

The first one I used Channel Swapping, a fairly common IR color technique.

The second one I just did some Channel Swapping, tinting, and colored the sky. I think that's what I did it has been a few years and I don't exactly remember.

The last one is a work in progress. I was zoomed in on the photo for some detail work and forgot to finish the bottom part. Now I use it as a before/after color photo example. Again the detail on what I did are hazy, I don't remember everything I did.

I have seen some crazy color work by others, everything from soft pastels to retina searing bold colors.

Color a photo or two and post them, I'd like to see your vision.

I still haven't really had a chance to learn much with mine. I did try a few photo's yesterday though. I just don't know what I am doing wrong? Not sure why the sky is this color....it kept happening?

Know that I am desaturating my images in PP to B&W, except for the color ones.

Look at the series of three photos on page 2 of this thread and see my PP results with B&W vs color. I think if you desatted to B&W, your images would be fine. Color IR is a whole 'nother animal, requiring much more PP, and maybe a different filter. B&W IR is relatively easy compared to color.

I think all three of your images would do well with B&W processing.

I can help a little, but not much, with color IR; but I can direct you to other folks who can help with that.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong at all. I just think that you are not finishing your image. Do you use photoshop? What format is your image in when it comes out of the camera? Jpeg, raw. etc? Let me know and I will try and help you.
It looks like all you need to do is to work with the levels and channels a bit and you would have a finished image. I will try and work one of your images if I get a chance.

Thanks Eric and Dheaton. I think I'm getting it now. LOL...DUH YUP!

Dheaton, I use Aperture and also sometimes Color Efecs Pro 4. These pics were in JPEG. Normally though they will be in RAW.

I love adding color to the photo's and would love to learn more about that!

Your B&W is looking good. Perhaps a little more time on mono color before you jump into color?

I'm just sayin'.
